The Surprising Mascara Mistake You Might Be Making

It’s hard to kick a habit that we’ve adopted for years, but it looks as though our mascara application technique is due for an overhaul. Contrary to popular belief, emphasizing the outer lashes for a winged-out look is actually making our eyes look smaller. We can’t be the only ones who thought it was just the opposite, right?

In a new video with lash expert Sarah Maxwell, makeup artist Monika Blunder clarifies that heavy outer lashes can weigh down the eyes, creating the illusion of droopiness and a smaller eye. But the fix is incredibly subtle: Simply move that mascara wand inward a few milimeters, and focus instead on the area that falls just below your eyebrow arch. Much like a perfectly angled arch opens up your eyes, placing your longest lashes there will take that impact even further.

Clumps and poor definition can also ruin the illusion of wide eyes—which is why we're obsessed with Honest Beauty's 2-in-1 Truly Lush Mascara and Lash Primer ($22).
