Welcome to the very first edition of Mandy Moore’s brand new Byrdie column: Mandy’s Must-Haves. Yes, we’ve tapped the actress/singer as our new honorary staffer. Moore, although famous for being in front of the camera, is a beauty junkie after our own heart, making her the perfect person to be our critique the newest lipstick, nail polish, and so much more for us.
Every month Moore will put dozens of new products to the test. Click through our slideshow for the products that got her seal of approval for April!
Those who know me well are aware that I am a big fan of all things beauty. So when the editors at Byrdie asked me to test-drive some of the goodies that pass across their desks, I jumped at the opportunity! Heck, I’m already a bonafide beauty hoarder, so I’m more than happy to share my findings as an unbiased guinea pig with the other beauty obsessed folks out there. As a matter of fact, this month’s haul proved to have some quintessential items to help me transition between spring and summer! Enjoy!
Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty Balm
I‘m always a fan of a simplified beauty routine, so I was eager to see if Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Beauty Balm was that illusive ideal middle ground between a bare face and my normal tinted moisturizer. It claims to minimize pores, fine lines and redness, plus it has SPF 20. I have to admit, I was impressed with its lightweight feel and velvety finish. It has just enough coverage to even out my skintone without making me look or feel like I was wearing a full face of makeup.
I don’t think I’ll ever be one of those perennially cool girls who can pull off nail art—it’s just not in the cards for me. I usually stick to a classic routine of nude, red, or dark cherry colors, but it didn’t take much convincing to try something new when I saw LVX’s polishes. They’re vegan and 5-free, plus the brand offers a ton of gorgeous summer colors! I fell hard for Roux, the perfect bright coral to take the place of my normal apple red. I also love Truffle, a mushroomy greige, that’s a step above a normal neutral. Plus, the polish has lasted for three weeks and counting on my toes!
Pantene Pro-V Original Fresh Dry Shampoo
Having been blessed with fine hair and slightly-oily roots, I jumped on the dry shampoo bandwagon a long time ago. I’m forever searching for a product that gives volume, without a tacky or sticky feeling that some formulas can leave behind. I was intrigued when Pantene’s new Original Fresh Dry Shampoo came my way and immediately proceeded to spritz it all over my hair. It has a pleasant, powdery scent that smells strong at first, but quickly fades, and gives a buildable texture I love. In fact, its already made its way into my daily hair routine. Oh, and it’s a fraction of the cost of my other beloved dry shampoos! I’m on board!
Chanel Cream Blush in Destiny
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Chanel’s new cream blushes, and I quickly learned that they live up to the hype! I tried Destiny, a sort of muted bronzy shade that went on creamy, and settled into a soft, natural-looking powder finish. It’s the perfect dose of sun-kissed color for those ladies of the paler persuasion—like me! I’m sold.
Milani Brow Shaping Clear Wax
I like to keep my makeup super simple on my days off, but I still like to keep my brows groomed. I normally use a brow gel, but I’ve heard that wax helps grip the color from a pencil or powder better, so I was excited to try this new wax. The verdict? I like the softer look the wax provides, versus the sometimes stiff, super-groomed hold from a brow gel.
CoverGirl Bombshell Volume By LashBlast Mascara
I’m a sucker for mascara and will literally try anything new. I’m not exactly sure what’s behind the two step process in Covergirl’s new Bombshell Volume Mascara, but I won’t pass up a product the promises "extreme volume" for my sad, stubby lashes. And yes, it does deliver discernible glossy length without clumping or flaking. Cool.
Paula’s Choice The Nude Mattes Eyeshadow Palette
This palette is everything I want from the world of eye shadow: classic colors and matte texture. The only color with shimmer is the silver, which is actually great to have, because it can double as a brightener in the corners of your eyes. The shades are buildable, blendable, and universally-flattering, with everything from creamy beige to terracotta to a rich charcoal grey (perfect to use as a liner).
