Just as we tailor our makeup to our eye color, so can we tailor our makeup to the hue of our hair. While blonde locks tend to look good next to shades of gold, and brunettes often look best when accompanied by a coppery-colored metallic, complementing red tresses is more difficult. To get the skinny on the best makeup for red hair, we reached out to a few makeup artists for their tips on how to complement red hair with makeup, as well as the products they deem best for those with auburn tresses.
According to Honey Artists Makeup Artist Suzy Gerstein, the old dos and don’ts as to what redheads can and cannot wear should be thrown out the window. While she recommends opting for tinted moisturizers and peach-toned bronzers to match the fair-toned skin that often accompanies those with red tresses, she also says that redheads can absolutely wear pink lipstick and that they shouldn’t be afraid to rock a red lip either.
For the makeup tips every redheaded lady should know, keep on reading.
1. Keep Face Makeup Minimal
It’s important not to wear too much face makeup if you have red hair and fair skin, says Gerstein, as full-coverage face makeup can look "unbelievable" on pale-skinned ladies. To provide realistic-looking coverage that lets freckles shine through, Honey Artists Makeup Artist Min Min Ma recommends wearing a cushion compact foundation like the one above or a tinted moisturizer like Jane Iredale Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer ($41).
2. You Can't Go Wrong With A Cat Eye
Red hair and a dark cat eye is a must-try beauty look for redheaded ladies, says Kristine Cruz, a senior makeup artist at Antonio Prieto Salon. To get the look, Cruz recommends using a felt tip liner, like the one above, and adding a few swipes of mascara to the lashes.
3. Choose Bronzer Wisely
Red hair is often accompanied by fair skin. If that happens to be the case for you, Gerstein says to choose your bronzer wisely. When picking out a bronzer, she recommends staying away from golden tones, as they can go "muddy" on your skin.
To avoid that muddy look, find a bronzer with a peach or pink tone that will enhance and add radiance to fair skin.
4. Don't Be Scared of Colorful Eye Makeup
Dress up your look with bright colored lashes. Ma recommends swapping your tried-and-true black mascara for a blue or burgundy hue to add contrast to your red tresses. Still want more color? Honey Artists Makeup Artist Azra Red suggests adding a bright liner into the mix. Her favorite color for redheads? This beautiful blue shade, Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Liner in Fervent Blue ($33).
5. Pink and Red Lips Aren't Off-Limits
Forget all those rules regarding what colors redheads can and cannot wear. When it comes to makeup, redheads can rock just about any lip color, says Gerstein. While she recommends a fuchsia statement lip for ladies with red hair, cool-toned red lipsticks work as well, as do nudes, just as long as they have an orange tone to them says Gerstein—you don’t want to look washed out.
