Love Beauty and Planet
Over the last few years, the drugstore beauty category has been expanding to cater toward more natural, organic, and niche products. Take Target for example. Alongside the classic brands like Maybelline, Revlon, Neutrogena, and Almay (all of which we love by the way), you can find other more boutique brands like Well People, Pacifica, Fig & Yarrow, and S.W. Basics.
While these natural, cruelty-free, and/or organic products are becoming more accessible, there is yet to be a brand that's focused solely on sustainability. That's where Unilever's new brand Love Beauty and Planet comes in. It's a new line of personal care products—think body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and more—that's produced and packaged with the environment in mind. Its slogan is "beauty and its environmental impact are inseparable." Keep scrolling to see the first few products that have just hit drugstore shelves.
The brand will offer six ranges of shampoos, conditioners, body washes, and hair and body treatments. Each one has a slightly different formulation and scent, though they all share a few of the same things. First, every single product is 100% vegan. There are absolutely zero animal products used. They're also never tested on animals. You won't find any parabens, dyes, or silicones either. Finally, all of the packaging is made from 100% recycled plastic. When the product is all used up, you can recycle the bottle again.
On top of those amazing sustainability efforts, each year the brand will release its carbon footprint, which it aims to reduce by 20% by the year 2020. Also, for each carbon ton it produces, the company will donate $40 to a carbon tax fund, which supports programs that reduce carbon emissions and landfill waste.
This shampoo is a part of the tea tree oil and vetiver collection, which focuses on purifying and refreshing dull hair and skin with ethically sourced ingredients. A body wash and conditioner are also part of the same conditioner.
Another collection we're looking forward to using is the Smooth and Serene Collection. It includes French lavender and argan oil to smooth frizz and create shine. (As you can see, each collection doesn't just differ by scent and formulation. Each one is targeted toward a specific hair and skincare concern, making it easy to shop.) We're guessing this one smells aromatic and calming, as lavender is wont to do.
Speaking of fragrance, each product is scented with an ethically sourced oil or extract. In this case, it's coconut oil and ylang-ylang flower. This shampoo belongs to the Hope and Repair collection, which aims to hydrate and treat damaged and dry hair and skin. The other products we can expect to see in this line are conditioner, body wash, and a three-in-one moisturizing oil.
Right now only the shampoo and conditioners are widely available at places like Target and Walgreens, though we're assuming the other products in each collection—like hair masques, body washes, and soaps—will become available soon. This coconut water and mimosa shampoo is a Volume and Bounty product, meaning it brings lightweight moisture and body to the hair.
If dry hair is your winter beauty concern (we know it is for us), reach for any of the products that are a part of the Purposeful Hydration line, like this shampoo. Shea butter and sandalwood work together to cleanse and hydrate thirsty strands. This one is definitely a unique combination of ingredients for a shampoo, so we're looking forward to trying it out for ourselves.
The final collection might just be our favorite one—at least we think it will be. (After all, we love rose-scented anything.) It's the Blooming Color collection, and it includes Amazonian murumuru butter and Bulgarian rose oil for sleek and bright hair. In other words, it was created to help you bounce back from dull lifeless hair. Such pretty packaging, right?
