Career Code: Lorri Goddard on Life as Hollywood's Go-To Colorist

Updated 09/23/16

In honor of Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power’s upcoming book, The Career Code: Must-Know Rules for a Strategic, Stylish, and Self-Made Career ($17), we’re kicking off an interview series featuring 17 questions (in honor of the book’s 17 chapters) about the work lives of the most inspirational female leaders in the beauty industry.

Hairstylist Lorri Goddard knows a thing or two about spinning things into gold, literally—whenever you see a perfectly highlighted, flaxen mane on the red carpet, it's safe to assume that Goddard is the colorist behind it. Chloë Grace Moretz; Rosie Huntington-Whiteley; Kirsten Dunst; Mary-Kate, Ashley, and Elizabeth Olsen; and Reese Witherspoon are just a small sampling of the big names who rely on Goddard's expertise. (That time Kim Kardashian went platinum? Yep—that was Goddard.)

You'd think such an esteemed clientele would keep the stylist busy enough, but Goddard took her career a huge step further last year, partnering up with fellow stylist Christopher Bragg to open up the Goddard + Bragg salon in West Hollywood. Needless to say, it was already an It destination before even opening—and that reputation has only amplified in the months since. (A glance at Goddard + Bragg's star-studded Instagram feed should confirm that notion pretty quickly.)

Still, Hollywood's beauty industry is hardly a breeze—it's more of a hurricane, actually, perpetually moving at breakneck pace. So how does Goddard maintain a cool head and a thriving business? Keep reading to find out.

"I am a hair color specialist, co-owner of Goddard + Bragg salon with my partner Christopher Bragg, and president of Goddard Bragg Inc. As a colorist, I create hair color that helps people feel their most empowered whether for real life or a 'reel'-life role. As co-owner of G+B salon and as president of Goddard Bragg, I help run the business, strategize, find new opportunities, and manage the team to help guide from a unified, centered, and happy place."

"It is a surprising balance of multitasking and time management—tools required for any business person wearing several hats. I require an ocean of creative, hyper-focused energy and an eagle eye. That said, I LOVE what I do and all the amazing people I am so blessed to meet and work with!"

"I wore these really cool three-inch faux alligator vintage pumps, large clip-on leopard earrings, a skirt, and a shirt—both of which I can’t really recall. I do, however, remember those shoes quite vividly; I was so over-the-moon happy to have found a matching shoe/purse combo from this hole-in-the-wall vintage shop in Pasadena."

"Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook. Her blend of wisdom, humor, and insightfulness are admirable and she has been a great source of inspiration for me. Not only does she persevere in the face of hardship, but she also continues to successfully pursue the collective goals of Facebook and triumph. She meets her objectives, sets demands, and all whilst raising a family. Recently she spoke at my daughter's UC Berkeley general commencement, which sort of solidified her role in my mind as a positive role model for women everywhere."

"I always check Pantone's color of the year when it first comes out. Everything in fashion trickles down from that. I also check out the Paris and New York fashion shows. Hair is a marriage of shape, shadow, and light. Additionally, product companies send my agent, Kimberly Albachten at The Rex Agency, new goodies for me to try and implement—so greatly appreciated."

"The biggest point that comes to mind that I learned firsthand years ago: Whomever you collaborate with, make sure and ALWAYS follow up on mutually signed, attorney-reviewed documents. If they're not geographically in the same location, or if they tell you they will sign it later, visually make sure they signed! The world is full of many beautiful things, but alongside that, it is also filled with people who say they have your best interests in mind who take advantage of trusting people who do not protect themselves.

Do not allow personal relations to fog your judgment when it comes to business endeavors. Be accountable, and protect yourself."

"Honor and integrity; good grooming; humility and quiet confidence; thoughtful communication skills (good listener, thinking before speaking, eye contact); and a vibrant, positive energy with a can-do attitude."

"My boots or favorite brogues, a good blow-dry, and I never underestimate the power of red lipstick."

"Honest, a relentless perfectionist, wants everything within moments seconds?) of asking, generous and kind. 'When Lorri makes a mistake she is accountable and apologizes, and expects the same of me. A tough cookie with a heart of gold.'"

"I usually sit outside and feel God's presence in nature. Sometimes I binge watch movies or series on Netflix. Always, I say a prayer and then turn on music I like and dance my ass off."

"Find another job, and put in your two weeks. ALWAYS leave the door open when possible. You want to keep your side of the road clean at all times, which translates to no regrets."

"When I am behind schedule, I order the SunButter Protein Smoothie and the Tight Belly Tonic from Alchemy in West Hollywood. I also usually get a side of juice with a ratio of three-quarters celery juice to one-quarter lemon juice with a splash of peppermint. When I am not behind schedule, I like to get the Urth Caffé open-faced tuna sandwich or a salad via Postmates."

"I have worked with SO many people through the years. To name a few things I have observed: not listening to clients and just doing what they feel like. Falling prey to office gossip. Talking big game and delivering little crumbs. Talking super loud about their famous client instead of focusing on and appreciating the wonderful person sitting in their chair at that time."

@goddardbragg / @chloegmoretz

"My daughter Chelsea, @abstrctshps, of course! Love my girl—she just graduated with honors from Cal Berkeley.

"The salon, @goddardbragg: Support your team at all times!

"@rodarte, because Kate and Laura Mulleavy are the creative geniuses of design.

"@uniteforwomen; hope and change for our sisters.

"@chloegmoretz. This powerhouse is one to watch, and I adore her!"

"In the morning, the first thing I do is I wake up and have my coffee or Puerh tea and read my devotional. They keep me energized and spiritually fit. Then I get on my vibration plate for 10 minutes and stretch before doing a 30-minute Physique 57 workout. This keeps me mentally and physically strong. I get my son breakfast, feed our animals, then check emails—last-minute changes happen overnight, and New York is three hours ahead!

"Before sleep, I drink Stress-Relief Yogi tea. Then I wash my face to scrub the day off, so to speak. Sometimes I take a magnesium bath to nourish and replenish."

"I am not in control of life's weather that blows my way; I am in control of how I respond to it. Let go, and let God."

"I'm working on an app that that combines cutting-edge technology and global communication, that allows you to get up close and personal with someone you admire.

"Also, my daughter Chelsea and I have founded a nonprofit called Reharvest Food Source. We are going to help fight hunger in Los Angeles and eventually all over California. Every drop in the bucket helps, and we plan on doing our best to make a difference."
