L'Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray
We put the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray to the test after receiving a complimentary sample from the brand. Keep reading for our full product review.
When I think of hairspray, I either imagine over-the-top ‘80s hairdos or people who really know what they’re doing when it comes to styling their hair. I’m good with a hairbrush, a flat iron, and the occasional hair mask, but any fancy hair products leave me feeling a little bit nervous. And yes, I do put hairspray in the category of “fancy hair products.”
When I got the opportunity to try the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray, though, I was intrigued: Apparently, this ultra-fine mist would leave my hair feeling clean with a soft, shiny finish. The bottle also informed me that the mist was so fine that it would disappear with the stroke of a brush. In other words, it promised to give my hair a little boost without the crunch that comes with hairspray.

Byrdie Clean?: No

About the Brand: L’Oreal is a French personal hair care company and the world’s largest cosmetics company.
About My Hair: Wavy, frizzy, and medium thickness
I have a love-hate relationship with my hair. To a certain extent, it’s easy hair. It’s not too thick or thin, and it responds well to heat styling tools. At the same time, it gets really frizzy when it’s hot and humid out (we’re currently in the thick of summer, so my good hair days are few and far between). And sometimes, when I go a little too crazy with the flat iron, it ends up just lying there, limp and lifeless.
While certain shampoos and shower water temperatures (lukewarm water for hair washing, please!) tend to work better for my hair than others, the general state of my hair is wavy and at least a little bit frizzy in the summer.
The Feel: Very light
The L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray is, as advertised, ultra-fine. If it wasn’t for the scent and sound, I’m not sure I would even know it was coming out. Once I had adequately sprayed it all over my hair from the recommended 12 inches away, I touched it and was pleased to find that it wasn’t at all crunchy or stiff—a welcome change from other hairsprays I’ve tried.
The Packaging: Tall and thin with a difficult nozzle
This is a big bottle of hairspray, and while it isn’t ideal for, say, taking in your carry-on luggage, it is ideal in the sense that hairspray tends to go more quickly than other hair care products. I love the tall, thin look and gold bottle.
My only issue is that I find the nozzle a bit difficult to use—it takes so much strength to dispense the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray that I was initially worried that the bottle was broken. While I understand that you don’t want a hairspray nozzle to be too sensitive, I think this one could have benefitted from a top and a nozzle that doesn’t require quite as much thumb muscle strength to use.
“I touched it and was pleased to find that it wasn’t at all crunchy or stiff—a welcome change from other hairsprays I’ve tried.”
The Scent: Light but it lingers
The L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray has a pleasant, light scent to it that I definitely enjoy. My only issue with it is that it lingers: On days I use it, I constantly find myself thinking, What’s that nice smell? The good news is that it definitely is a nice smell, but the bad news is that it sticks around. So if you’re sensitive to scent and don’t like when it lingers, you might want to skip it.
The Results: Impressive
Overall, I was impressed by how easy the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray was to use. It goes on easily, holds whatever style I want well, and as advertised on the bottle, it brushes right out. It gives my hair extra shine and a little volume boost on flatter hair days, and it’s definitely a good product to have for special occasions.
That being said, I don’t use this hairspray every day—I maybe use it once a week, if that. I remain a little freaked out by hairspray, even this one—it is flammable, after all—and I’m not sure I regularly want to use something with a scent that lingers in this way. Still, it’s great to have in a pinch, and I’m so happy I discovered it.
The Value: Good
The L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray retails around $11 for 11 ounces of hairspray. This is a pretty average price for hairspray, making the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray neither expensive nor inexpensive as far as hairspray goes.
Similar Products: This one stands out
As I’ve said, I’m not exactly a big hairspray person, but I did recently use the Tigi Bed Head Masterpiece Mini Hairspray when I went to a wedding. While I liked the size of it in some ways—the bottles are only 2 ounces, making them ideal for travel—I went through them very fast. The Tigi Bedhead Hairspray is also more expensive than the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray, and the hold is a bit too stiff and crunchy for my liking.
If you want a hairspray that's easy to use and easy to get out, this is it.
One of the best things about the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray is that if you’re not in the mood to have hairspray in your hair anymore, you don’t have to take a shower—you can brush it right out. This hairspray is incredibly easy to use, light, smells great, and will give your hair a boost when it needs it most.
