I Started Working Out Again After a Long Hiatus and This Balm Saved Me

"Heavy duty chill."

I'm usually skeptical about CBD products. With all the buzz surrounding the ingredient, I find certain claims and aggressive marketing strategies can overpromise. My favorite mascara of the moment happens to be Milk Makeup's Kush High Volume Mascara ($24), but it delivers—lush, clump-free lashes with no fallout (the hemp-derived cannabis oil replaces beeswax as a binding component to keep the formula vegan). I've only dabbled with CBD products orally, and have found from experience most don't offer full-spectrum CBD (read more about that here). So when it comes to topical application, I've been especially wary.

That said, I've read a lot of great things about Lord Jones, one of the leading brands in the topical CBD space. I first learned about Lord Jones a little over a year ago, when celeb stylist Karla Welch explained she uses High CBD Formula Body Lotion ($60) on her clients to combat sore feet when they walked the red carpet. The brand has earned a cult following, and not just among celebrities. When Lord Jones teamed up with shoe designer Tamara Mellon earlier this year to create the High CBD Formula Stiletto Cream ($70), which was inspired by the aforementioned trend of actresses using CBD on their feet before or after a red carpet, I knew I had to try out the line for myself.

By chance, I happened to get my hands on Lord Jones' High CBD Formula Heavy Duty Chill Balm ($75) the very same week I joined a gym after year-and-a-half hiatus. Knowing I'd really need to dive back into fitness if I wanted it to become an integral part of my life again—much to the dismay of my underworked muscles—I bought a personal training package with sessions three times a week. Needless to say, my muscles are sore and I even hurt my back from one bad dumbbell squat when my trainer wasn't watching.

Foam rolling and using a massage gun (intense but necessary after sled push workouts) have certainly ameliorated some of the discomfort, but they don't alleviate the lingering soreness (or achiness I'm now working through along my lower back). From the very first time I used the balm, I felt the soreness and pain melt away (even the fingers with which I applied it felt soothed afterward). My backache was diminished, my muscles literally felt chilled out, and the whole experience instilled a sense of calm.

As an initial skeptic, I'm still impressed by how quickly I can feel the balm take effect. I apply it throughout the day as needed, warming it in my hands and then gently massaging it into troubled areas. Even the smell, from the formula's blend of organic jojoba oil, organic shea butter, and organic extra virgin olive oil, is soothing. I'm hoping that my workouts become a healthy habit I continue to maintain, but I already know that this CBD balm has become an integral part of my life.
