When it comes to testing a beauty product’s longevity, the red carpet is the ultimate hurdle—one that immediately separates the impostors from the real deal. After all, if a lipstick can withstand the flashing bulbs and unpredictable temps of a red carpet, then chances are high it will last through our excessive coffee sipping.
With that in mind, we gathered seven lipsticks makeup artists often count on for red carpet events. These colors are incredibly photogenic, never drying, and last through anything—the pictures don’t lie. Keep scrolling to see them all!
Makeup artist Jo Baker accentuated Ratajkowski’s natural lip color using Urban Decay’s Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22) in Stark Naked. “It features a blend of avocado, olive oil, and shea butter that help [this] anti-drying matte wonders stay smooth and creamy all day,” she says.
If you’re going to wear rust eye shadow, make like Gigi Hadid and pair it with a barely there lip. Her makeup artist, Patrick Ta, reached for Maybelline’s Color Sensational Lip Color ($6) in Nude and topped it off with lip balm for a sheer, natural effect.
When you find a perfect red lipstick, you don’t let it go. Makeup artist Kira Nasrat loves Tom Ford’s Lipstick ($52) in Cherry Lush, which she uses on clients like Jamie Chung.
Nothing makes a statement more than a fiery orange-red lipstick on the red carpet. Makeup artist Hung Vanngo used CK One Pure Color Lipstick in Little Liar, which has since been discontinued (tear), on Bosworth. Similar shades to try: Nyx Matte Lipstick ($6) in Indie Flick and Estée Lauder Lipstick ($30) in Kendall Jenner’s Shade.
Celebrity makeup artist Lisa Story used Laura Mercier’s Velour Lip Lover Colour ($28) on Miranda Kerr at this year’s Vanity Fair Oscars party. “It’s a gorgeous color with a rich, velvety finish,” she says. “It has lovely deep pigments, so we didn’t have to worry about it running throughout the night. It’s the perfect consistency.”
A berry shade is one of the most versatile lip colors, easily dressed up or down for any occasion. We love the one used by makeup artist Melanie Inglessis in particular: Dior’s Addict Flash Hydra-Gel Core Mirror Shine Lipstick ($35) in Insoumise.
Once you have a lipstick named after you, it’s hard to use anything else. Case in point: Zoe Saldana, who frequently wears L’Oréal’s Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Lipcolour ($9) in Zoe’s Red. Makeup artist Vera Steimberg paired it with softly arched brows, glowing sin, and fluttery lashes.
