The Lipstick You Should Buy, Based on Your Myers-Briggs Personality Type

In a world of seemingly random occurrences and notably different personality types, it’s difficult to consistently understand your place in it all. We have astrology, which studies the relative positions of celestial bodies to interpret human behavior, as well as tarot readings and psychics who have set up shop on practically every street corner in New York. Whether or not you’re a believer, it’s important to note why we’re so eager to have someone else explain our behavior. Such curiosity can stem from a yearning for a deeper understanding of ourselves—why we do the things we do and make the decisions that we make.

But you don’t solely have to rely on whether or not Mercury is in retrograde to have some of your more existential questions answered.

During a particularly formidable year in my 20-something existence, I was introduced to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It’s a test that takes inventory of your personality by way of questioning you on a range of notions, from how you react in social situations to whether or not you’d consider yourself a dreamer (insert John Lennon pun here). You respond on a scale of strongly disagree to strongly agree, and at the end of it all, you’re left with a four-letter acronym that almost eerily describes your personality.

“The essence of the theory,” the Myers & Briggs Foundation writes, “is that much seemingly random variation in behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment.” And that’s only reasonable. If the way we reach conclusions and perceive those around us are systematically different, then our interests, reactions, values, motivations, and skills will follow suit.

Ultimately, 16 distinctive personality types rose to the forefront—each with a variation of extraversion versus introversion, sensing verses intuition, thinking versus feeling, and judging versus perceiving. And while I could wax poetic all day about my own personal profile (ESFP for life!), I thought I’d reevaluate each personality type by way of beauty. More specifically, lipstick. I consistently feel more powerful navigating any social situation—I’m 76% extroverted, after all—with a velvety red slicked across my lips.

Myers and Briggs have me pegged.

So without further ado, feast your eyes on 16 lipsticks that best fit your personality type, interpreted by yours truly and celebrity makeup artist and Violet Grey brand ambassador Kira Nasrat.

They're outspoken and never shy away from a challenge, so it’s only natural they match their lipstick to a go-getter disposition. A palette of bold and moody hues allows ENTPs to mix and match shades as they will seldom do the same thing the same way.
