Purple lipstick is one of those things that may be striking on a red carpet (case in point: model Joan Smalls’ vibrant violet lip at this year’s Met Gala), but it doesn’t always translate well to everyday wear. Not so the case with Laqa & Co’s Sheer Lip Lube ($18) in Menatour. Don’t be fooled by its purple Kool-Aid exterior—once applied, the actual color is a sheer, soft violet that’s much less pigmented than the fluorescent shade of the packaging.
The chubby pencil is technically marketed as a gloss in stick form, but I found that it left a much more subtle finish than the slick sheen I was expecting—a definitely plus for a shine-wary person like me. The best part is the balm-like quality—it’s made with shea butter, so it leaves your lips feeling smooth, hydrated, and plump. In fact, it’s much more of a tinted balm than a gloss or a stick, which makes it appropriate for the office, brunch dates, date-dates, and beyond. Swipe on this pencil next time you feel like taking a walk on the bolder side—no model pedigree required.
