By now, we know to expect the unexpected with Lady Gaga. Since she stepped onto the scene, the singer has delivered outside-of-the-box performances, outfits, and beauty looks. And some of her most iconic career moments have happened at the MTV Video Music Awards. There was the time she wore a meat dress and headpiece in 2010, dressed as her male alter ego Jo Malone in 2011, and performed in a white nun-like look in 2013 to name a few.

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards was also one to remember for Lady Gaga. As the first-ever recipient of the MTV Tricon Award, she celebrated the occasion in futuristic outfits and jaw-dropping beauty looks. For her glam this year, Gaga’s hairstylist Frederic Aspiras and makeup artist Sarah Tanno drew inspiration from Gaga's life and new album Chromatica. “This year's VMAs hair looks were inspired by her freedom to really express her art down to every detail," Aspiras says. "With the hair color, it was a canvas of watercolors mixed with a splash of bold color. For the style, I wanted her to show her strength and vulnerability." To achieve Gaga's hair color and style, Aspiras used Joico products and ghd styling tools.

When it came to her makeup, Tanno wanted to create looks that took fans on a journey. "We wanted to transcend the different dimensions of Chromatica, taking you on a ride with her glam from the really approachable but very glamorous, simple makeup for the carpet to something really industrial, punk and kind of retro with her glam for the performance," she says. For her red carpet moment, Tanno used all Haus Labs products on Gaga including the Eye-Dentify Gel Liner in Punk on her lash line, RIP Lip Liner in Rule, and Le Riot Lip Gloss in Glass Slipper.

While we were captivated by Gaga’s makeup and hair moments, we were equally enamored with the masks she wore throughout the night. The Haus Labs founder sported several different masks to follow COVID-19 safety protocols while she performed alongside Ariana Grande and accepted her many awards (five, to be exact). Ahead, take a closer at the six masks the talented songstress wore at the 2020 MTV VMAs.

After the show wrapped, Gaga changed her mask again and sat down on the VMAs carpet surrounded by her awards. This time, she wore a Michael Ngo black mask embellished with spikes and chains – which is very fitting for a boundary-pushing rockstar like Gaga.
