When it comes to Kylie Jenner’s beauty game, we’ve learned to expect the unexpected. She keeps us waiting with bated breath for her next dramatic hair transformation, whether that’s rainbow braids or fiery red strands. Her latest metamorphosis has her following in big sister Kim’s footsteps with a stunning platinum color—and yes, that is her real hair this time.
Typically a dye job this dramatic would take days, if not weeks. So we were astonished to learn that Jenner colored her hair platinum in a matter of hours. That’s right: The beauty icon took her mane from jet black to icy blond literally overnight, a process that can sabotage even the healthiest hair.
Except… Jenner’s mane is looking shinier than ever. It’s all thanks to her celeb colorist Priscilla Valles, who just revealed exactly how this crazy hair transformation happened so fast without totally scorching Jenner’s hair.
Keep scrolling to learn how the products and techniques Jenner’s colorist used to bring her platinum blond overnight!
Originally, Kylie didn’t actually mean to go platinum. She was aiming for the honey blond color that she introduced last year. However, Valles says that as soon as the bleach hit her hair, it started lifting color incredibly quickly. After the first wash, there were barely any broken strands or damage. How? The key was that Valles used Olaplex, a bond multiplier that reinforces the bonds of your hair, so when chemicals like bleach come in contact with it, they can’t inflict the usual damage. Valles treated Jenner’s hair with Olaplex between each color lift to keep its strength and integrity.
Olaplex’s professional bond multiplier is for in-salon use only. (Find a salon that carries it on the brand’s website). Looking for something similar you can use at home? Try Redken’s pH Bonder Post-Service Perfector ($16), which similarly strengthens weak hair bonds and can be used weekly before shampoo. You can also snag a bottle of Olaplex No. 3 Repairing Treatment ($29) to use at home.
Valles coupled Olaplex with a cool-hued Redken toner, and that was all it took to transform her from inky black to icy blond. To re-create the process, Valles also recommends using a low peroxide volume. If your colorist tries to use a level-40 volume, you might consider asking them to slow their roll. As Valles puts it, “It’ll work fast, but it will ruin your hair.”
As for the upkeep? “I left Kylie with an Olaplex mask, but we’re doing toners every two weeks to keep it nice and silver, because when you wash it, the blond gets faded and yellow.” Valles also knows the importance of a good shampoo and at-home hair masks. She likes Sachajuan Color Save Shampoo ($28) and Ouai Treatment Mask ($32) for DIY maintenance.
