In honor of Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power’s new book, The Career Code: Must-Know Rules for a Strategic, Stylish, and Self-Made Career ($12), we’re kicking off an interview series featuring 17 questions (in honor of the book’s 17 chapters) about the work lives of the most inspirational female leaders in the beauty industry.
When Dior Beauty has a big announcement to make—say, that Bella Hadid is its latest spokesmodel—it's safe to assume that Kim Meyer is the woman drafting the words. As the beauty label's PR director, it's Meyer's job to oversee every aspect of the brand that we see. If a celeb wears a Dior-centric makeup look on the red carpet, it's Meyer who ensures that the word gets out to the right outlets, and in turn, fans across the globe. New ad campaign or product launch? Just another (busy) day at the office.
So, no, being a beauty PR boss isn't exactly all parties and glamour. Constantly making sure that Dior Beauty is on everyone's radar often requires long hours, staying one step ahead of the news cycle, and a ton of travel, among other demands. So how does Meyer stay on top of it all? Keep reading to find out.
"I am the director of public relations for Dior Beauty U.S. In a nutshell, it's my job to make sure everyone is buzzing about all things Dior Beauty."
"That my job looks much more glamorous on social media than it actually is! It's true that working for Dior provides me with incredible experiences opportunities, but I always say that at the end of the day, a job is a job, including mine. It's hard work, and it can be as intense and stressful as it is fun and fabulous."
"When I graduated college, all my girlfriends job-hunting in New York City had the same interview uniform: a Theory pantsuit. Mine was gray with pinstripes, and I just gave it to Goodwill last week."
"I love a good work caucus with my brother-in-law, Dan Migala. He is the founder and chief innovative officer of PCG, his own sports marketing agency, so our professional worlds couldn't be farther apart. But it's literally his job to 'think outside the box,' and I am always so inspired by his creativity, leadership, intelligence, and heart. Also, anytime I have to speak in public (nightmare!) I rely on him to talk me off the ledge."
"Ah! So many. I am constantly inundated with news on the beauty industry, from the social media accounts I follow, to the beauty and fashion sites I check daily, to the countless magazines that land on my desk each week. It's an integral part of my role to stay up-to-date on the industry."
"There is not much that I regret in my career path. I feel I have made the right changes at the right moments, (whether or not I knew it at the time), and I've also been lucky to have supportive mentors, bosses, and colleagues along the way."
"A passion for the industry, ability to multitask, a sense of professionalism, a positive attitude, and an ability to take initiative."
"Good hair and makeup! And a great pair of leather pants."
"I think it's important to have regular brainstorm sessions with not only my beauty colleagues but with my hardworking, successful friends in other industries. It's motivating and inspiring to hear what others are working on outside the beauty bubble."
"Hopefully she'd say I'm motivating, encouraging, and inspiring. But also fun and approachable. I try to keep things in perspective. After all, it's PR, not ER!"
"I try to force myself to get outside and take a walk to pick up lunch every afternoon. I love the Plaza Food Hall. But when I am too swamped to leave my desk, I order in—a salad from Roast Kitchen, or a green smoothie from Juice Press. If I go out for lunch with an editor, Nobu 57 is my go-to."
"With dignity, and grace. It's likely that whatever industry you work in is much smaller than you realize, and I've found it is important to maintain relationships and not burn bridges. I feel lucky to have good relationships with my former Chanel and Wall Group colleagues. In fact, I call some of them my best friends!"
"I admire the ambition and confidence that is common among this generation's entry-level employees, but I think there can be a lack of appreciation and acknowledgement of the tenure of their superiors, and an overall lack of patience with their own career trajectories."
"On Instagram, @DiorMakeup and @Dior—obviously! But at the moment, it's all about Snapchat. It's fun to see people's personalities shine through in their feeds. Some of my faves are my friend Jen Atkin (jenatkinhair), because she’s always going somewhere and doing something fabulous; Peter Philips, Dior Makeup's creative and image director (peterphilips), because he's a master Snapchatter and has so much fun with it; and my friend Hillary Kerr (Hillary.Kerr), because she's hilarious and smart and we have a shared love of food and libations."
"I travel a lot with my job (just this year: Marrakech, Tokyo, Paris, Calabria, and Cannes, to name a few), so it’s hard to keep a regular daily routine. But when I’m home in NYC, a large almond milk café au lait from The Frog’s Crown in SoHo in the morning, followed by The New York Times while I ride the E train uptown. In the evening, the goal is always to get in a workout, which I find to be a great stress reliever. But sometimes after a long day, there is nothing better than a glass (or two) of wine and Blue Ribbon sushi with my boyfriend or friends."
"When I was first starting out in my career, my father told me to always remember that no one is irreplaceable, meaning that no matter what level you are or where you are in your career, there is likely someone that would kill for your job. That piece of advice has since kept me motivated to be the best at what I do and not get too comfortable in any role."
"I just came back from the most exciting press trip of my career, to celebrate the reopening of Christian Dior's summer home in Grasse, Château de La Colle Noire. It was so inspiring to be immersed in the place that Christian Dior loved most, and to be reminded of the brand's rich, storied heritage and connection to Grasse. Also, we just announced Bella Hadid as the new Dior Makeup ambassador, which is super exciting! She's so gorgeous and such a perfect fit for the brand. It will definitely be a fun collaboration!"
