For some, deciding when a young person should be allowed to experiment with makeup is a contentious issue. Most people remember their first attempt at applying some form of makeup in middle school, though some began much earlier or later. There are a lot of opinions on the topic but no clear-cut answer about the "right" time to start.
That's why we found it so interesting to learn Kim Kardashian West's take on it all, since, you know, she's the queen (kween?) of contour and a self-confessed makeup obsessive who has now launched her own beauty brand. Her 4-year-old daughter, North West, has proven to have a penchant for fashion and beauty as well, but according to Kardashian West, she still has a while to wait before she can get into her mom's makeup collections.
It all came about during a filming for makeup artist Desi Perkins's YouTube channel. While getting her makeup done with the new, unreleased KKW powder contour palette, Kardashian revealed that North West was slightly off camera. This lead to Perkins asking Kim the question, "At what age do you think you'll start letting her wear makeup?" Her response was (drumroll, please): 12 years, old since that's when she herself "started to get into it." If North's recent behavior is any indication, she will be serving us major beauty inspo before long. After all, she recently made headlines when Kim shared a snap of her turning her time-out into a DIY spa day.
Surprisingly enough, instead of looking to her momager Kris Jenner or any one of her famous sisters, Kim credited her late father for inspiring her love of makeup. "When I was 14, my dad got me makeup lessons," she shared. "It was all kind of nude, monochromatic… It's so my vibe and probably why I like the kind of makeup that I like."
So I guess the beauty industry can actually thank Robert Kardashian for kicking off the nude-taupe-bronze trend that his daughter has made her signature. If you want to mimic her golden contour, go to the KKW Beauty website to snag a contour kit when they come in stock. Otherwise, try one of our favorites, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit ($40).
