What We Like
  • Small brush for precise application

  • Lifts and helps curl eyelashes

  • No flaking or smearing

What We Don't Like
  • Needs multiple coats to show best results

  • Wand bristles are very short

  • Is not budget-friendly

Kevyn Aucoin's The Volume Mascara will help add volume to your lashes, along with curling and lifting them. Keep in mind that'll you will need a few coats to see the best results, and if you have longer eyelashes, you might find the brush takes some getting used to. For those with shorter eyelashes, the brush really helps to define and elongate without a messy application.

Kevyn Aucoin's The Volume Mascara

About the Brand: Launched in 2001 by pioneering makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin, Kevyn Aucoin Beauty offers cosmetics and tools rooted in its namesake's expertise, creativity, and fearlessness.

About My Skin: Daily makeup wearer

Mascara is one of my favorite products to wear because I love how it instantly transforms my eyes, and I can wear it alone without eyeliner and eyeshadow. I have fairly long eyelashes (I’ve used lash growth serums for years), and my eyelashes also go through phases where they will fall out and grow back at different lengths which is totally normal.

When I look for a new mascara, I always ask myself the following question: Will it give me volume and help separate my lashes so they don’t look clumped together? I tend to wear makeup daily, and my everyday products consist of foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, highlighter, brow gel, and mascara. Some brands I wear often are Victoria Beckham Beauty, Nars, and Giorgio Armani Beauty.

How to Apply: Straight-forward

Like any mascara, the application of this one is pretty straightforward, but there are a few things to keep in mind to get the best results from this product. First, the brush is much thinner and smaller than other mascara wands, so you will need to hook it at the bottom of your lashes and wiggle it to really get a good start on applying. Move the brush upward to coat each lash, slightly bending the lashes as you go to add volume. Since the brush is smaller, you will need at least three to four coats to see the formula start to work and set in.

Another way you can utilize this mascara is by using it as a base or top coat if you’re someone that likes to combine the use of multiple mascaras to achieve results. Because of the fact it helps to add volume and separate lashes, it’s a great product to use in conjunction with others for something different.

The Results: Takes a few coats

I had to apply a few coats to really see the magic of this mascara begin to take place.

I immediately noticed was that the formula did add more volume to my lashes, and they stayed that way throughout the day.

Often, I find that I need to reapply mascara through the day to keep my lashes looking lifted, but that wasn’t necessary with this formula. It took a few coats for my eyelashes to look as separated as I wanted them to, but overall the formula wore well, did not flake or smudge, and came off easily with eye makeup remover at the end of the day.

The Value: A bit pricey

For $28, this mascara is priced higher than most others, but if volume is what you’re after, you will find it delivers, no matter the length of your lashes. If you find you have shorter, stubbier lashes, this mascara would be the best investment for you.

Similar Products: Cheaper options

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara ($26): With a slightly wider brush compared to The Volume Mascara, this Benefit Cosmetics mascara promises instant length upon application and helps to separate lashes. Bristles help to grab close to the root of lashes to ensure each one is coated and looks thick and full.

L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Original Mascara ($11): The thin, precise wand of this L'Oréal mascara is suited for shorter lashes that need help with length and volume. The comb helps to separate eyelashes while the flatter side of the wand adds length and volume.

Final Verdict

Kevyn Aucoin's The Volume Mascara is absolutely worth testing out to add some volume and length to lashes. Wear it alone or as a base/top coat to other mascaras to add some separation and beautiful jet-black pigment.
