I Tried the Wellness Treatment That Kendall Jenner Got as a Birthday Gift

Kendall Jenner Wellness Routine

It's no secret that the Kardashian-Jenner family is used to giving and receiving opulent gifts. Remember when Kylie Jenner was gifted with a Rolls-Royce for her 21st birthday? What about just a few weeks ago when Kylie gifted her momager, Kris, with a $250,000 Ferrari? Well, it looks like their penchant for extreme gift-giving extends past luxury cars to include trendy wellness treatments. That's according to Vogue, which reported that Kendall Jenner received a personal infrared sauna for her 23rd birthday, which was this past week.

I had the chance to try an infrared sauna out for myself earlier this year, and I completely understand Jenner's devotion to them. Not only was it relaxing, but it also boasts a bevy of different wellness benefits that I, for one, didn't mind cashing in on. Keep scrolling to see all the benefits of infrared saunas and hear a little more about the experience of sitting in one.

Infrared saunas have been quietly buzzing in the wellness space for a while now. They differ from traditional saunas in that they envelop the body in dry heat that's emitted from infrared heaters. (Not to take you back to high school science class, but if you can recall, that's the light that comes from the left side of the electromagnetic spectrum.) Kendall Jenner isn't the only fan of these, as infrared sauna treatments have been popping up all over New York and L.A. throughout the past couple of years, and other celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, and Cindy Crawford have expressed their admiration.

The list of purported benefits is long. It includes all the normal benefits of a traditional sauna and then some. We're talking about things like detoxification, increased collagen production, increased metabolic function, faster muscle recovery, and more.

"My birthday was this weekend and my sisters actually got me an infrared sauna," Jenner told Vogue backstage at the Victoria's Secret show. "I've gotten really big on LED light therapy after having a full body treatment recently. It's such cool technology with [the] different light settings that benefit the skin internally. I'm putting it in my backyard and am super excited to have it at my house."

We already know the myriad benefits of LED light therapy on the skin: It can reduce the signs of aging, kill acne-causing bacteria, and more, which is why LED light masks exist. The same technology is often used in conjunction with infrared saunas to provide added benefits. Certain colors of light are thought to affect specific mood and bodily processes. At HotBox Sauna Studio in L.A., for example, you can choose from a long list of different colors to bathe in under overhead lights as the infrared sauna works its magic. When I visited the studio earlier this year, I chose to sit under blue light, which is supposed to help support mental clarity and balance. There's also pink, which is thought to support calmness, red for courage, green for balance, and yellow for optimism.

During my 45-minute session, I felt surprisingly comfortable, even though I usually don't last long in traditional saunas since I find them a little, well, suffocating. There's something about that heavy, wet air that makes me uncomfortable if I'm exposed to it for too long. This was different. I was sweating, but I wasn't short of breath or counting down the minutes until it was over. The blue light gave it a nice ambiance, and since infrared saunas don't affect techy gadgets, I was able to take my phone inside and scroll through Instagram (social media for the win). After, I rinsed off in the studio's special vitamin C–infused shower, changed, and went on my way. All in all, it was a relaxing experience that I wouldn't mind fitting into my schedule regularly. And now that I know Jenner approves, I just might take that as a sign to book another appointment.
