Keke Palmer was the definition of “booked and busy” during 2020. The multi-hyphenate entertainer hosted the MTV Video Music Awards, released two EPs, graced magazine covers, and even snagged a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host along the way. But amidst her bustling schedule, the last twelve months also provided Palmer with an opportunity to reflect, dive deeper into her self-care practices, and double down on using her platform for a purpose. On her social media channels, one topic Palmer became increasingly transparent and passionate about discussing last year is her skin. In December 2020, the actress bared it all when she posted a no-makeup selfie and revealed she’s been struggling with acne caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). In true Keke fashion, she used her diagnosis to let her followers know they are not alone along their skincare journeys. Her post resonated with over one million of her followers on Instagram.
With Palmer’s unfiltered honesty surrounding skincare and skin health, it’s a no-brainer why Olay Body tapped Palmer to be the spokesperson for its skincare-inspired body care products last year. Byrdie caught up with Palmer to discuss her partnership with Olay Body and her favorite body care essentials from the brand, her beauty must-haves, and the biggest lesson she learned in 2021.
The One Thing That Keeps Her Skin Hydrated and Healthy
"The Olay Rinse-Off Body Conditioner ($6) has helped me get through these New York winters,” Palmer says. “I love Olay because, first of all, they’re affordable. And I really love this new line. I started working with them last year when they brought out their vitamin B3 and hyaluronic acid products, which help us make sure we maintain moisture specifically over time. First of all, hyaluronic acid is natural to the body, and so their products were reminding us to take the same precautions we do with our face with our body. Then from there, [Olay] graduated to adding retinol to its new body wash and conditioner. And I’m so excited for it to come out in 2021."
The One Thing That Helps Her Destress
“I love to workout. It helps me clear my mind. When I workout, I’m able to just disappear for a moment.”
The One Thing She Loves to Eat
“When I realized I’ve been struggling with PCOS, I had to realize I needed to change my diet. And in the process of doing it, I realized that I enjoyed taking time to cook and make a meal for myself. I realized it is such a huge form of self-care. I didn’t realize how much I needed it. I started doing it early in the pandemic, and then I kind of forgot about it. But after I did my movie, Alice, I became invested in going hard for myself in every way. My favorite food that I’ve been cooking lately is mushrooms. I can make mushroom tacos, steak, pasta, and soup. I’ve found every single way to make a mushroom, and I’m not sick of it at all.”
The One Thing She Always Keeps In Her Makeup Bag
“I like the Dior Lip Glow ($34). It has a slight tint to it. I like to keep things simple. I haven’t been wearing too much makeup lately. I just wear it for work. And sometimes I wear it so much for work that I become too tired to wear it in my real life. So, that’s the main thing that I have in my bag. I also have lash extensions, so I don’t wear mascara.”
The One Thing She’s Listening To Right Now
“Grew From You, which is the ending song on Virgo Tendencies Part 2. That’s how I feel about my life, 2020, and where I currently am. I feel like I grew from everything.”
The One Thing She Learned From 2020
“The year has taught me to put myself first. I think the year was trying to teach all of us this.”
Olay Body's Cleansing & Renewing Body Wash with Retinol and Rinse-Off Body Conditioner with Retinol will be available in stores nationwide in early 2021.
