I'll never go back to thick, gloppy lotions.

As beauty editors, we get bombarded with a ton of new products every day (we know—tough life). Reviewed is a series where we report on some of the best products we’ve tried. Whether it’s a drugstore lipstick that lasted all day or a hand cream that saved us this winter, you’ll find all of our favorites in this column. Enjoy!

Putting on body lotion is arguably the most annoying part of my beauty routine. Scooping out the thick, gloppy lotion, lathering it all over myself like I'm marinating a piece of meat, then waiting for it to dry so it doesn’t leave grease stains on my clothes…it’s all just so un-sexy. Thus, I was intrigued when I received a pitch about something called a Body Stone, a smooth, round-shaped solid body moisturizer that melts on contact when you glide it across your skin. Birthed from the mind of former pastry chef Kate McLeod, it’s supposed to be a welcome alternative to your typical body lotion—one that encourages you to take a moment for yourself and turn the mundane act of moisturizing your body into a self-care ritual. Read more about my experience with Kate McLeod's Daily Stone below.

The Packaging

Each Body Stone comes is in sustainable, plastic-free packaging. You can choose to buy it with a reusable bamboo canister (that looks super cute on your vanity, btw), or opt for the refill only that comes in a recyclable packaging. The bamboo packaging really adds to the whole *taking care of myself in a fancy way* aesthetic, plus, you can sleep well knowing you're not harming any turtles or oceans along the way.

The Feel

The stone really does melt on contact and leaves a soft sheen on my skin that doesn’t feel sticky or heavy. I also love the size and shape of the Body Stone, which fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, and glides on oh-so-smoothly, like a Zamboni machine on ice.

The Ingredients

The base of the stone is cocoa butter, which is super soothing and hydrating (and a natural preservative), along with sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, and fractionated coconut oil. There’s zero synthetics, alcohols, or parabens, so you can slather it all over without worrying about weird ingredients.

  • Sweet almond oil is the perfect oil for dry, sensitive skin, since it's hypoallergenic. It also absorbs into the skin quickly, making it ideal to use on the body, especially when you need to get dressed fast.
  • Avocado oil is a dermatologist fave. It's full of good-for-your-skin antioxidants relieves and soothes dry, itchy skin.
  • Fractionated coconut oil is different from the stuff you find on the shelves at your local grocery store. The long chain fatty acids have been removed from the coconut oil, keeping it in a permanent liquid state. This means it can absorb into the skin more easily, giving it nourishment and moisture.

The Scent

The Daily Body Stone is scented with a blend of three essential oils that are designed to calm and soothe your mind, perfect after a day of meetings or just when you want to treat yourself after a long shower. Rose oil can reduce anxiety and increase intimacy levels. Frankincense has a sweet, earthy, woody scent that also decreases anxiety (notice a pattern here), while neroli oil adds a final, bright flourish that uplifts your mood. Altogether, it creates a scent that is both grounding and cheerful at the same time.

The Results

I’m not sure why I found the thought of gliding a solid moisturizer across my body so appealing—it just sounded so soothing, like giving myself a hot stone massage—and I haven’t stopped using it since.

I use it after my shower when my skin is damp, but also on nights I don’t shower before bed as the last part of my nighttime ritual. The stone really does melt on contact and leaves a soft sheen on my skin that doesn’t feel sticky or heavy. The scent is so soothing and acts like an instant de-stressor; I like to warm up the stone up in my hands and breathe in deeply before I apply it. The craziest part is that when I wake up, the sheen is gone and my skin just looks (and feels) soft and hydrated—like it drank up all the hydration as I was sleeping.

The Value

Yes, it’s pricey at $45 per stone, but they last for quite awhile and you’re paying for the quality of ingredients and the self-care experience—and really, what's the price limit on that?

Similar Products: You have options

Lush Soft Coeur Massage Bar: Made with honey, cocoa butter, shea butter, and cocoa powder, this lotion/massage bar creates a decadent (and luxurious) feel on your skin. It's also $9, adorable, and looks (and smells) like a mini piece of chocolate.

The Earthling Co. Lotion Bars: If you're looking for a nut-free option, this lotion bar is for you. At $18, it's made with four simple (and organic) ingredients—cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax.

Our Verdict

You honestly can't go wrong with an all-natural, clean body moisturizer that also encourages you to take some time for self-care. Not only that, it actually makes my skin feel like butter—and it smells good, too. If you're still on the fence about the price, there are mini versions that are perfect for tossing in your purse.
