Last night, celebrities, models, designers, and muses flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala (the event most people just call the Met Gala) and flaunted their most futuristic beauty looks for the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology”–themed event.
But what happens in those magic hours before a celeb arrives, preened and poised, on the red carpet? Short answer: a lot. We got an exclusive look at makeup artist Coleen Campbell-Olwell’s day as she prepped her client, the ever-elegant Kate Mara, for the Met Gala red carpet—or, what we like to call the most revered red carpet of the year.

"Woke up to a cloudy NYC morning. Even rain can't put a damper on the Met Ball."
"It’s going to be a long day, so I decided that truffle Parmesan fries were the best way to start the Met-day prep!"
"Decisions, decisions… Loving all the different lipstick choices I have from Sisley."
"Love playing with all my products, exploring inspiration for the look. What will I choose?"
"More products from Sisley!"
"Love this girl!"
"Applying the finishing touches just before Kate steps into her Paco Rabanne dress."
"All glammed up and ready to hit the red carpet!"
"All done! A nice way to end the night, having dinner with my agent, Darin, at The Bowery Hotel."
Campbell-Owell used Sisley’s Phyto-Khol Perfect Eyeliner ($57) in Navy, then used the silver shade in the brand’s Phyto 4 Ombres Eyeshadow Quad ($115) in Mystery and swept it across her entire lid. She swirled Smashbox’s LA Lights Blush ($35) on her cheeks, and finished with Sisley’s Long Lasting Lipstick ($57) in shade L32, a soft mauve.
