If you were a teen or in your early twenties between 2006 and 2010, you were probably aware of the pop culture phenomenon called The Hills. A spinoff of the MTV reality show series Laguna Beach: The Real O.C., The Hills followed cast member Lauren Conrad as she embarked on her professional journey as a “real adult” in Los Angeles. Friendships were forged. Trust was broken. Combat boots were worn to the beach. Some of the most iconic moments in television history can be accredited to The Hills—from LC’s solemn face as she tells Heidi, “I wanna forgive you, and I wanna forget you,” to Lisa Love telling LC she’ll “always be the girl that said no to Paris.” Regardless of your thoughts on reality television, The Hills left an unmistakable mark on our cultural zeitgeist for years to come—if only because we learned to never, ever say no to Paris.
Thus, the Internet went abuzz recently over news of a reboot—aptly named The Hills: New Beginnings—that promised to feature members of the old cast (hi, crystal-clad Heidi and Spencer!), along with some fresh new faces. One such new face is Kaitlynn Carter, who isn’t really a new face at all if you’ve been following the fashion crowd in LA. With over 650K followers and counting on the ‘gram, the sunny-haired New Hampshire native is the co-founder of the influencer-fueled shopping platform, Foray, and also happens to be a fellow beauty buff. Knowing evidence of a dedicated skincare regimen when we see one, we asked Carter to share her current favorite beauty favorites—from the one place in LA she trusts to get a facial to the product her O.G. Hills-alum husband, Brody Jenner, always steals.
Ahead, get to know the secrets to Kaitlynn Carter's Cali-girl waves and glowing skin.
Can you walk us through your nighttime skincare routine?
Kaitlynn Carter: I use Farmacy’s Green Clean Cleansing Balm to instantly melt away my makeup, and then use a warm, wet washcloth to wipe the balm off. I rotate every other night between slathering my face in Farmacy’s Honeymoon Glow AHA Resurfacing Serum to tackle exfoliation as I sleep, and Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask to hydrate as I sleep. I also use Doterra’s Lavender Oil on my wrists, which helps me to relax in bed.
And what about in the morning?
KC: In the morning, I begin by rinsing my face with warm water to open up my pores. I throw on some eye gels to hydrate my under eye area and get rid of any puffiness. I like the ones from Skyn Iceland or 111SKIN. If my skin seems like it could use some exfoliation, I use Goop’s Exfoliating Instant Facial for 10 to 15 minutes. Next, I use a hydrating mask. I have two favorites: Youth to the People’s Superfood Skin Reset Mask and Farmacy’s Honey Potion.
Once I rinse that off, I use a serum, which I choose based on what my skin seems like it needs most that morning. Lately I have been noticing dark spots on my face, so I’ve been using Sonya Dakar’s Fade Away serum. Other times, I like to just use True Botanicals Pure Radiance Face Oil. I finish with a moisturizer by my esthetician at Skin Worship in Beverly Hills.
What makeup products do you on a daily basis?
KC: My most essential makeup products are my Hourglass eyebrow pencil and Chantecaille mascara. I use It Cosmetics Foundation and Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer, and Lune + Aster’s Bronze and Glow palette for contouring and highlighting.
What about for a night out ?
KC: I mostly just dial up my eyes! I’ve been using Marc Jacobs eyeliner on my waterline and it stays put so well! My favorite eye shadow palette is Charlotte Tilbury’s Vintage Vamp. I use the shadow as eyeliner too. I usually do a nude lip. MAC’s Spice lip liner is good.
What's your favorite drugstore beauty product?
KC: L’Oreal’s Ideal Clean makeup remover towelettes for on-the go makeup removal!
Are there any products you’ve shared with Brody?
KC: Hardly any! He keeps his skincare routine super simple. Once in a rare while he may use my moisturizer, but other than that we pretty much only share floss!!
What's your secret for keeping your skin glowing after a long day of shooting?
KC: Makeup can definitely dry my skin out, so if I want it to look dewy/hydrated again, it means washing my makeup off and rehydrating with moisturizer. I could reapply makeup if I still need to be out in public, but otherwise I just make sure to take makeup off before bed. That’s key to keeping skin fresh and healthy!
Favorite secret facial spot in LA?
KC: Skin Worship. It’s a holistic and organic spa, and facials are done on a bed of crushed crystals. All of the estheticians are awesome there but I especially love Madison and Debbie.
