For Julia Michaels, succumbing to the ongoing stress and inactivity of the pandemic has never been an option. Instead, the Heaven singer has successfully used 2020 as an opportunity to pivot her mindset, find love, delegate time to self-care, and make new music (!!!).
"I can't share a date for the album yet, but I can share that a majority of the music is about my new healthy relationship with love," Michaels shares with Byrdie exclusively about her upcoming album speculated to drop in 2021.
Despite keeping details about her romantic companionship to a minimum, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter did clue us in on how finding love heavily shaped her new sound. "My new relationship has influenced probably 99.9% of it," she gushes.
Ahead, Byrdie caught up with Michaels prior to the new year to discuss her 2020 beauty and wellness must-haves, along with the simple things she does every day to keep her mind at ease during these chaotic times. We’ve even got the scoop on the one thing she stockpiles to make her home her sanctuary.
The One Thing That Quenches Her Skin's Thirst
"Before the pandemic, I wore makeup every day, literally. Now, I don’t wear it as often and my skin is able to breathe. Because I have really dry skin, I like Augustinus Bader moisturizer ($265) because it's really thick [and nourishing]. I just lather my whole face in it and it feels really nice."
The One Thing She Never Forgets to Do Before Bed
"Every night before I go to bed, I wear Skyn Iceland eye patches ($33) because I don't sleep. I'm a horrible sleeper."
The One Lipstick She Loves Right Now
"When I put out my recent single Lie Like This, I wanted to embody love and passion. What better way to do it than to wear bold red lipstick? Lately, I've been committed to MAC's Ruby Woo ($19)."
The One Thing That Keeps Her Calm
"When I feel very overwhelmed, I take a nice long shower. It calms me down because I feel like all the things I’m thinking about, all the anxiety, all chaos is physically washed away. It makes me feel better."
The One Thing She’s Stockpiling This Year
"I literally have like, 15 candles around the house. I have so many because I love a good candle. I’m really into Jenni Kayne’s Musk candle right now because it smells like the forest and a warm hug."
The One Thing That Eases Her Social Anxiety
"I'm constantly trying to find new ways to keep myself occupied and out of my head. Reading has really helped. Before quarantine, I wasn't much of a reader, but now I’m always reading. Thrillers mainly. Maybe that's just the Scorpio in me. My favorites books right now are The Woman in the Window, Behind Closed Doors, and Then She Was Gone. "
The One Thing She’d Do "If The World Was Ending"
"If the world was ending, I would probably just call my family and hug them really, really tight. And maybe buy all the Hot Cheetos I could find and just fill up a bathtub with them."
