It's true: We love Jonathan Van Ness so much that we'd probably take his advice on just about anything—but when it comes to beauty, the Queer Eye star certainly knows his stuff. Thus, it's no surprise that skincare brand Biossance would tap him to be its first-ever celebrity ambassador—because if JVN calls a product his "friend and confidante," you bet we'll be intrigued (and adding to our carts, stat).
We've already asked him about his 5 favorite beauty products, but given how #obsessed we are with JVN both on and off-screen, we wanted more of his self-care secrets. Here, he shares his six-step nighttime skin routine as part of our Byrdie Bedtime series. From a facial mist that will have you "living luxuriously" to an oil that might make you contract "Benjamin Button disease," trust us when we tell you that you're going to want to take notes. Step 1: Cleanse
"I'm so living my facial cleanser commercial fantasy right now," Van Ness quips as he's sudsing up with this "gorgeous" cleanser over the sink. "Those Noxema girls in the nineties didn't get enough credit. It's hard to wash your face on camera, honey!"
Step 2: Mist
Step two in Van Ness's nightly routine is this hydrating facial mist, which he doesn't just spritz on his complexion. "I also don't know why but I really like to spray it on my hands," he says. "It just makes me feel like I'm living luxuriously."
Step 3: Eye Cream
Van Ness applies a dollop of this eye cream—the first of three Biossance products he uses every night—using gentle pressing motions, without "rubbing really hard."
Step 4: Serum
"A lot of retinol can be a little bit aggressive on the skin," Van Ness explains. That's why he swears by this serum, which provides all the glow-giving benefits of retinol with none of the irritation, thanks to its star ingredient bakuchiol.
Step 5: Moisturizer
"This is gorgeous baby Algenist," Van Ness says while rubbing it onto his face and neck. "I love this product, she's very gorgeous, she's great for nighttime."
Step 6: Face Oil
The final step: Oil. Van Ness's facial oil of choice also comes from Biossance. "This oil right here... she's my friend, she's my confidant, she soothes me," Van Ness remarks. "Squalane naturally occurs in our body, so when we use products that have squalane the body's like, 'Yes friend, I know you!'"
Key Ingredients
Squalane is the hydrogenated form of squalene. It is a lipid that is naturally found in the skin and secreted by the sebaceous glands. It calms inflammation, supports the outer skin barrier, and works well with actives like retinol.
