Ever since the Netflix reboot of Queer Eye debuted, we (and pretty much every other fellow binge-watcher we encounter) have had an ongoing on-screen obsession with the show's resident celebrity hairstylist, Jonathan Van Ness. And actually, we could say the obsession veers offscreen as well since we're equally captivated by his infectious social media presence. That being said, not only has he shown he's downright lovable personality-wise (we'd be lying if we said we haven't shed some mascara tears post–heartfelt transformations), but he's also proven his showstopping prowess where his styling chops are concerned. And frankly, we wanted more of his secrets.
Therefore, we did the only levelheaded thing we could think of and asked Jonathan Van Ness to step in front of our camera to share just five of his favorite beauty products of all time. (Spoiler: Dental hygiene is involved.) From a "gorgeous" must-have paddle brush that just might help you survive a zombie apocalypse and an infrequent bad hair day to a bubbly, humectant-esque facial mask that yields a two-day-strong glow, Van Ness (thankfully) didn't hold back where his covetable product arsenal is concerned.
According to Van Ness, everyone deserves a gorgeous brush in their life, and this 50th-anniversary edition from Olivia Garden is his. He says the pick at the bottom has you covered for creating the perfect part (or protection during the "zombie apocalypse," naturally) and is gentle enough on damp strands to use as a wet brush.
"Every girl has to have a floss that is in her bag," Van Ness emphasizes. "I really like this tea tree one from Desert Essence because it feels more cleansing and it's nice and thick. It really gets the nooks and crannies of my gums."
"I love Ouai's aerosol-based dry shampoo because a little goes a long way, and it doesn't leave too much of a white residue on the scalp. It's one that I use at home, and it's also one that I use on clients."
"This oxygen recovery mask from Dr. Brandt is everything. It gives this nice bubbly moment as it sits on your skin oxidizing, and you can just feel it invigorating your skin, and when you remove it, you have more brightness and moisture. Plus, the results last for a full day or two."
"On a day like today when it's 117º for some reason in April, everyone needs to have a gorgeous hydrating facial mist. I like this one from Herbivore. She just looks beautiful, has a nice scent, and a coconut base."
