There are endless things the media says about Jennifer Lopez, but the fact that she looks "incredible for her age" tops the list. For years, the singer-actress-entrepreneur has been tightlipped about her regimen (other than to say that she works out frequently and rarely drinks). The actual products that she uses to slather on her complexion, however, remain mysterious—until now. Enter: JLo Beauty, her eponymous skincare collection that will allow you, too, to glow like JLo. "The one question I always get asked during interviews is what I use on my skin," she tells me during our Zoom call, her skin looking candlelit and as smooth as a pebble. "I wanted to create a line because I had tried every product out there, from drugstore to the most high-end products, and wanted to create this line as a simple program to beautiful, healthy youthful skin."
The line, bottled in rose-gold (or "glow-gold" as she calls it) and inspired by an antique Cartier watch Lopez owns, consists of an eight-piece collection, ranging from a cleanser called That Hit Single to a serum called, of course, JLo Glow. The products are grounded around the "five S's," which Lopez credits for her seeming inability to age: sleep, sunscreen, serum, supplements, and "sano," (from the Spanish phrase vivir sano, which means "to live healthily"). Ahead, find out more of the skincare secrets I learned during my Zoom date with Jennifer Lopez.

Consider Olive Oil
One of the main ingredients you can find throughout JLo Beauty is an olive complex consisting of squalane, fermented oil, olive leave extract, extra virgin olive oil. If you equate olive oil with salad dressing, you might want to rethink it. Lopez tells me that she grew up using olive oil as a cure-all beauty remedy. "Whenever my hair, skin, or nails were dry, I'd go back to olive oil," she says. "It's a natural ingredient that's been a secret of mine and my mom's for so long." As it turns out, olive oil has actually been used for centuries for everything from skin burns to hair growth; it's full of fatty acids and antioxidants that prevent water loss, protect against free radicals, and more.
Skincare Starts Within
The most intriguing part of the line, in my opinion, are the supplements. JLo was insistent on including them in the launch and crediting as an important part of her ability to remain youthful. "People fought me on the supplements, but it's really about sticking to this idea of a 'pump and a pill' every single day," she said. "You need to be working from the outside and putting something on the outside." The ones in her launch collection are made with Olive extract, which has been shown to boost skin hydration and moisture, vitamin E, manganese and copper, all of which can help support the body's natural collagen production.
Lopez is a big fan of affirmations, which she credits for everything from her family to her skin. "One of my friends for my birthday one year gave me self-care guru Louise Hay's book," she says. "Her whole philosophy was about our thoughts create our life; if you have a bad thought, all you have to do is change the thought and the feeling will change. Those affirmations have helped me through the hardest times in my life and forced me to think in a positive way even when I’m in pain. I definitely recommend learning those affirmations and going outside, arms wide, and accepting all of the beautiful energy that is in the world." JLo's daily affirmation are the following:
I am youthful and timeless at every age.
I live a beautiful adventurous life with my children and we’re all in perfect health always.
Never Forget SPF
During our Zoom, JLo recalls how she went to two dermatologists when she was in her twenties: one gave her sunscreen and the other told her to get Botox. "I was like, uhhh, I'm gonna pass," she says. "I just wonder what would have happened if I had started Botox at 23." Instead, she swears that using sunscreen and a good cleanser are what have made the biggest difference in her skin. "One of the big things I encourage people to do from when they're 15 or younger is wear sunscreen every day," she says. "We developed a sunscreen that you can wear every day as your day moisturizer. That will protect you more than anything. That's something I've done since I was twenty-two."
Don't Go Overboard With Exfoliation
When asked about the lack of a scrub or exfoliator in the launch collection, Lopez shares that it was intentional. She recalls how she experienced a terrible breakout around her mouth area in her 30sh, and upon visiting a derm, was told that she was overdoing it with exfoliation and causing the skin around her mouth to get irritated and to thin. "There are certain products like scrubs for the skin that are really damaging, especially as you age," she says. "I love a good body scrub, the skin on our body is more resilient, but for the face, I'm not one who wanted an exfoliator for the first iteration of the line. As time goes by, we might launch a gentle scrub for younger girls who are under 30."
School Yourself on Inflammation
When I ask JLo if she learned anything new about skincare or supplements during the creation of her line, she's quick to mention inflammation and just how much it can affect our skin and bodies. "I didn't know inflammation is a thing we eventually die from—it's the thing that ages us," she says. "Having to incorporate that philosophy into the skincare line was important to me and it wasn't an easy thing to do."
