Jerry Harris officially became the best friend we all wished we had after his debut in Netflix's cult-hit reality show, Cheer. His bubbly spirit, teddy-bear persona, and decibel-defying "mat talk" made him an instant crowd favorite, and anyone who's seen the series (or follows him on Instagram) will attest that his infectious positivity is medicine for the soul. Our new life mantra? Be the Jerry you want to see in the world.
Harris recently partnered with Schmidt's Deodorant as part of the brand's #GoSchmidts campaign to encourage people to make the switch to natural deodorant, swearing that the natural deo brand kept him smelling fresh even after the sweatiest of his grueling cheer workouts. In the wake of the partnership announcement, we caught up with Harris via phone and asked about his new routine, if he's Team Instagram or Team TikTok, and the mat talk he'd give to anyone who might be struggling during quarantine. How's your day going?
It's going good. Well, it's morning time, so I'm just now waking up, but it's good so far.
Well, thanks for starting your morning with me. Congrats on your Schmidt's partnership!
Thank you! I definitely love the opportunity to be partnering with them during quarantine, and I really have been focusing on trying to be healthy, especially during this time. Something that interested me was that the deodorant was natural, and that's what I'm gearing to switch to for myself and my body, and not just with eating, but with the products that I use. It really means a lot to me that I had this opportunity to partner with Schmidt's.
Definitely. Do you have a favorite scent out of the collection?
I love the Rose and Black Pepper because I love the way it smells. And it's sweet and spicy just like me.
Tell me about your current quarantine routine. What's is like a typical day like for you?
I'm quarantining at home in Chicago. And a typical day for me...I wake up in the morning, and I will go on walks or run in my neighborhood for about an hour or an hour and a half, it depends. I'll work out usually, then eat after. And then I will typically play games, or I'll go on Tik-Tok and do some of those dances. That's pretty much it. I'll FaceTime my friends. I've been really enjoying it.
Do you have a favorite go-to quarantine meal that you've been making?
I made Hot Cheeto-fried pickles. I made them twice, and I absolutely love them.
Incredible. With quarantine, like you said, we're taking it at a slower pace. A lot of us are used to just go, go, go, and it can be kind of a crazy change to be just stuck at home. Do you have any tips for making sure that you're taking care of your mental health during this time?
I would definitely say try to do things that definitely make you happy. I think if you start with that, it will make you feel better in the long run.
Do you have anything else that you do that gives you an instant mood boost? Other than your Hot Cheetos fried pickles.
Well, I start my day by writing in my gratitude journal, and I write five things a day that I'm very grateful for. I like to call it "My attitude of gratitude" journal. It's really for me to write down things I'm thankful for and so I can start out my day with a burst of positivity and appreciate the things I've been blessed with. It's something that really gets me boosted for my day.
I love that so much. What's your current skincare routine?
Well, I really don't have a skincare routine because I'm only 20. [LAUGHS.]
So you just have naturally beautiful skin.
Yes, thankfully. I just try to use natural products. I don't like to spend a lot of money on soaps or anything, so I just try to use as many natural things as I can.
What are you watching or listening to these days that puts you in a good mood?
I love watching "That's So Raven" on Disney Plus. It just brings me back to my childhood and makes me so happy.
I love that so much. She's an icon. When Cheer came out, you were suddenly skyrocketed to fame. How has that transition been for you?
Well, I definitely rely on my family or friends. I try to help people as well, and recently, I donated to the local food bank because food demand is just so high right now, and donations are low. So I really try to focus on giving back. And my family and friends really do a good job of keeping me grounded and keeping my headspace where it needs to be. So I just try to focus on making people happier, and that makes me feel happier as well.
What's your workout routine now that we're kind of in quarantine?
I try to do more and more each day. But I would normally do sit-ups, jumping jacks, burpees, mountain climbers. I run outside. I think I started at 15 or 20, and now I'm up to 40/45 each, so I'm really just trying to elevate and progress as much as I need to.
Team TikTok or Team Instagram?
I'm team both. I love them both.
Who are some of your favorite people to follow on Tik Tok, and who are some of your favorites on Instagram that make you happy?
If you could “mat talk” with some of your fans right now who might be having a hard time during quarantine, what would you say to them?
I would definitely tell them to always stay positive, focus on what is good in your life, and all the other things that are heading your way. Try to focus on helping other people whenever you can and however you can. The more good you put into the world, the more good will be in the world.
What are you looking forward to doing the most once quarantine is over?
I'm looking forward to hanging out with my friends because that's something I really miss. I just miss their company and the laughter we would share together and the memories we would make together.
Are you keeping up with your friends on FaceTime on Zoom?
Definitely FaceTime. We would have team Zooms here and there whenever everyone felt up to it. But definitely FaceTime and we would just talk and laugh...but it's not enough. I need them in my face.
