We’ve been obsessed with Jen Atkin for a while now—she’s known for supplying Hollywood with perfectly effortless waves and textured ponytails… Plus, Khloé Kardashian’s epic blond lob (gasp!) was of her creation. But now she’s moved on to someone even more famous. Yes, I’m talking about Barbie.
As time has gone on, Barbie has gone through many necessary changes. She now comes in real-woman shapes and sizes, with an entire slew of different skin tones and hair textures. So it’s only natural that now she has secured her own glam squad—with Atkin at the forefront. The made-for-Insta collaboration (because millennials) allowed Atkin to give Barbie’s hair an update inspired by today’s most sought-after style icons. (Cue the Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Chrissy Teigen style montage.)
We chatted with Atkin to find out more, and she gave us the exclusive inside scoop.
“Barbie is the perfect muse,” Atkin explains, “especially now that she comes in different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities.” She continued, “This project is a dream come true, creating modern styles for these one-of-a-kind Barbies that literally represent all the cool girls out there.” Atkin describes a cool girl as someone who looks modern, effortless, and chic—but never like they spent hours getting ready. Amen to that.
Just like the rest of us, this isn’t the first time Atkin has styled Barbie’s hair. She explains, “I’ve always been obsessed with Barbie; she was my first client! As a child, I tried to style her hair in so many different ways, but without success. I used to braid her hair and brush it out for a permed look, and I cut it into different styles. Barbie definitely inspired me to be a working woman.”
While deciding which four styles and techniques to lend to the project, Atkin consulted images of her celeb clients. She adds, “I think models and celebrities always inspire the everyday woman to change up her look.” And now we can look to Barbie for the same thing. “I wanted to represent the modern woman. I wanted diverse looks that worked for different woman with different hair types and personal styles.”
Luckily it’s just as easy to reproduce the looks at home (on yourself or, you know, your Barbie collection). The most important tool for each is a flatiron as well as Ouai Wave Spray ($26) for that lived-in finish. Want more info? Don’t fret: Atkin has broken down each style under the learn section on her recently launched haircare collection’s website.
