We’re so used to relying on the topknot as our low-key, effort-free standby that we sometimes overlook its amazing versatility. The gym? Natch. Casual weekend brunch? Sure. But what about a night out?
Exhibit A: Jaime King, who flaunted a chic, polished take on the ’do last night at Marie Claire’s Fresh Faces party in Los Angeles. Topknots might be pretty straightforward in general, but hairstylist Chad Wood turned this look into a statement by paying close attention to detail, from the sleek texture to the fishtail braid (not to mention the visible white hair tie).
But don’t let the intricacies fool you—it’s still a breeze to throw together yourself. See how to get the look below.
Wood began by blow-drying King’s hair back and away from her face. “I then took R+Co’s Motorcycle Flexible Gel ($26) and ran it from roots to the midshaft of her hair,” he says. Next, he brushed it all back with a Mason Pearson brush ($230) and secured it in a tight ponytail.
Next up is that gorgeous fishtail braid, which we know is easier said than done. (Take a look at this great tutorial if you’d like to give it a shot; otherwise, a regular braid works fine.) Once it’s completed, flip it forward, tuck it under, and secure it in place with bobby pins or another hair tie.
