In the beauty world, Jackie Aina’s name holds weight. The 31-year-old Nigerian-American has over three million subscribers and 276 million views on YouTube. The influential makeup maven has captivated a global audience because of her humorous makeup tutorials and her commitment to calling out beauty brands for their lack of diversity. Over the past 10 years, the beauty guru has used her platform to empower marginalized communities and equip her viewers with the tools to look and feel their best.
Her journey to making the beauty industry more inclusive has led her to team up with some of the biggest beauty brands to create makeup that is made with darker skin tones in mind. Aina has a collaboration with Artist Couture under her belt, where she created highlighters suitable for all complexions. She helped Too Faced Cosmetics’ formulate nine deeper shades for their Born This Way foundation line. And this summer, Aina is continuing to champion for representation in beauty with her latest makeup launch.
In her most recent video, Aina revealed that she teamed up with Anastasia Beverly Hills to create a brown-girl-friendly eyeshadow palette. “I’ve always felt like the palettes they’ve come out with have always been dope, but I’ve always felt like there was a little something missing, a little something I would do differently, or a little something that doesn’t work for my complexion," she says. "Let’s just be real—that’s the reality of all palettes on the market. So when they reached out to me to create my own, I was overwhelmed.
I was ecstatic. I called this the Jackie Aina palette because it literally embodies everything about my personality and the colors I wear most often.”
Her namesake palette includes 14 cruelty-free warm and cool metallic and matte shades, with some iridescent shades thrown in. The colorful palette boasts an array of pink, purple, brown, and red hues.
Though I am far from an eye makeup master, I have been a longtime fan of Aina. So, of course, I had to test out her palette. Keep scrolling to see how I achieved this vibrant purple eyeshadow look.
First, I primed my eyelids with Milk Makeup’s Flex Concealer ($28). Then, I used a medium fluffy brush to swipe on Pinker, a mid-tone cool plum, as my base color. I then took a flat brush to pat on Zamn, a sparkling rose gold, on my eyelids. Next, I used a thin liner brush to dust a bit of Pinker and Big Wig, a matte rich purple, onto my lower lash line. The above is my finished look, which took me less than 10 minutes to do.
Overall, I’m impressed with this palette and can see myself reaching for it when I want to amp up my makeup look. The shades are all highly-pigmented and deliver minimal fallout. The wide range of shades makes this the perfect palette for creating neutral daytime and glam nighttime looks. Above all, these shadows are long-lasting. I applied the pigments during the early afternoon and my eyes still looked amazing when the evening came around. If vivid, decadent eye looks are your thing, you’re definitely going to want to invest in this palette.
The palette launched on AnastasiaBeverlyHills.com on August 6 and will be sold in retailers nationwide on August 15.
