Issa Rae is the well-known actress behind Awkward Black Girl, the web series that's as equally relevant as it is hilarious. (Did we mention that she's also the creator of it?) If you haven't seen it, we recommend that you should make it a priority. Then, after you’ve binge-watched that, go ahead and watch her HBO show, Insecure, which is just as brilliant and timely.
Clearly, we're fans, which is why we were so excited to hear about her newest role. No, it's not acting in, creating, or writing a hit TV show, but it's just as exciting. She's the new face of CoverGirl. It looks like she's not that awkward or insecure after all. Instead, she's been an easy, breezy, and beautiful CoverGirl all along.
“My character is ever-evolving, and makeup is a tool to help transform my persona—whether for a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life,” Rae said in a press release. “Becoming a CoverGirl means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways.” We agree. After all, CoverGirl is the same brand that has a diverse set of ambassadors like Zendaya, Janelle Monáe, and Katy Perry. It's also the first mainstream makeup brand to welcome a male ambassador to the ranks (James Charles in 2016).
Rae posted this image on Instagram, captioning it "I remember being an awkward black girl in high school, reading the pages of my favorite magazines, casually flipping through @COVERGIRL ads, singing their slogan in my head. Never EVER in my life did I imagine I'd be one. I am SO honored and SO excited for what’s to come."
The official CoverGirl account then posted a photo to welcome Rae, writing, "YES, you better believe it beautiful, the secret is finally out and we couldn't be happier! YOU ARE EVERYTHING and we are so honored to welcome you to the #COVERGIRL family!"
We couldn't be happier that CoverGirl is the latest brand to welcome more diversity and representation to its campaigns. Hopefully we can look forward to an Issa Rae capsule collection much like Katy Perry's. A girl can dream.
