Training to be a principal ballet dancer is hard enough. The long hours, the blistered, impossibly sore feet, and the demanding choreography are just a portion of their reality. On top of hitting each mark perfectly, their beauty looks, which are applied and removed on a daily basis (sometimes repeatedly in a 24-hour period), need to be flawless. As a result, they need to use products with impressive staying power that are high-impact and skin-friendly in nature but also easy to remove at any given time.
To find out which products give off that ballet glow that can even be seen from the highest seats in the auditorium, we sat down with a principal dancer from American Ballet Theatre, Isabella Boylston, for her top picks.
"I actually find that it's really versatile. I can wear it for day-to-day. I just dab a little on and then rub it in or, you know, layer it on for stage," says Boylston of this buildable foundation. She's also impressed by its luminescence, one that isn't offensive in the slightest, even in harsh stage lighting.
Boylston says she goes crazy applying this powder glow all over the high points of her face. It comes in tan-silver, peach, and golden tints to complement all undertones.
According to Boylston, more is more when it comes to stage makeup, especially lashes, which is why she loves this thickening and lengthening formula from Giorgio Armani.
While Boylston says that she usually shies away from red lipstick in fear of looking too clown-like, she swears by this long-lasting variation from Chanel. It acts like a stain, setting into the lips and staying put without any dryness or flaky aftermath.
A former dancer, Jordan Samuel joined the skincare community to create this makeup-melting natural gel cleanser that gently removes products and impurities. It was specifically formulated for stage makeup, but imagine the wonders it'll do on your everyday face beat.
