YouTube beauty star and California native Ingrid Nilsen is the fresh face of BareMinerals, and in an exclusive interview, the 28-year-old bubbly personality shared her mantra with us (you’ll want to steal it) and told us why it’s important to allow ourselves to feel whatever we are experiencing on any given day. “I wake up and accept the moment that I am in,” she says on her daily affirmation. “Sometimes it means getting out of bed and getting dressed. On other days it means I’m in a great mood, and I am super social and wanting to talk to everybody.” (We can relate!)
Ingrid is also a change ambassador to the United Nations for gender equality (no big deal) and has seven million followers across all her social media channels, four million of which also subscribe to her YouTube channel. Keep reading to learn what other lessons she’s picked up over the years, like not conforming to beauty rules. And if you didn’t think it was possible to love her more than you already do, think again!
BYRDIE: Is there a mantra you live by?
INGRID NILSEN: Be your best self. Which is why it’s on the bag for my collection with BareMinerals, because it is something that I tell myself every day—to accept who I am that day and realize this is the best that I can do today, and that’s okay.
BYRDIE: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in all your years in the YouTube and beauty industries?
IN: You get to define what is beautiful. I think that took me a while to figure out. When I was younger, I felt like I needed to be on top of all of the trends and that I have to make it work for me. As I got older, I realized I could take what works for me and leave the rest behind. I don’t have to force it.
BYRDIE: What’s the most recent beauty trick you’ve picked up?
IN: How important essence is in a skincare routine. Essence really opens up your skin and allows any other products that you put on, like your moisturizer or serum, to do their job and for you to get the full potential out of those products. I didn’t realize that until probably the last year/year and a half. Now I’m a big advocate of it. I notice a difference in my skin. My skin is a lot suppler, and I think it’s because my skin is absorbing more of the products that I am using.
BYRDIE: What’s another important part of your beauty routine?
IN: Every single day I make sure that I properly remove my makeup because I am all about skincare. At the end of the day, nothing is going to work if you’re not removing your makeup.
BYRDIE: Do you prefer to have a signature look or one that’s constantly changing?
IN: I like experimenting. I’ll try different eye makeup looks or different lip colors. But for the most part, I like to keep my makeup really fresh and natural, and then add in little pops here and there. My everyday go-to is really fresh, radiant, natural-looking makeup. I want people to be looking at me and not my makeup.
IN: In addition to those videos is one that I created right after I came out. My friends and I took a road trip to Maine, and we documented it. It’s really special because I came out, and we immediately left on that trip. It’s filled with such great memories. Maine is absolutely stunning, and we just got to spend time with each other in this really big moment in my life. I didn’t even realize it at that time. Looking back on it, it’s just such a wonderful thing to reflect on.
BYRDIE: What dream or goal do you hope to achieve in the near future?
IN: This is very random, but I really want to go to Marfa, Texas. It’s been on my list to go to for a while, and I’ve looked into it a lot. I desperately want to go. I think the artist community down there is really cool. So many of my favorite artists either live there full-time or part-time, or spend a lot of time there. I’d really love to see it with my own eyes.
