Among the heaps of beauty products that beauty editors get to test on a regular basis, there are always those few standout brands we remain loyal to. For me, one of those is Renée Rouleau’s eponymous skincare line, which I’ve now used for nearly five years. If you aren’t familiar with the skincare mogul, she’s a 30-year veteran in the industry. An esthetician by trade and educator by nature, her direct-to-consumer website also features a must-read blog knitted with informative articles covering everything from proper sunscreen wear to microcurrent devices to debunking skincare myths. Rouleau believes knowledge is paramount when it comes to caring for your skin, which is why she encourages all customers to take her skincare quiz first to identify which products your skin actually needs rather than ordering based on what you think feels right. Rather than the generic “dry, “normal” (what is “normal,” skin anyway?), “oily,” and combination” classifications as your choices, Rouleau has outlined a range of nine different skin types (denoted by numbers) that consumers typically fall in to help acutely target their personal skincare needs. She’s certainly someone you want behind your product formulations—nothing in the line is driven by trends or flashy marketing; instead she offers the essentials for every skin type underscored by research and proven efficacy. It also doesn’t hurt that she works with the likes of Demi Lovato and Lili Reinhart, so you know she’s a trusted source.
Below I’m sharing my favorite products from the line. While I’m technically a skin type 6, I’ve also come to love a few products outside the recommended regimen that make my skin super happy.
This lightweight gel-to-milk cleanser is perhaps the best cleanser I’ve ever used. It’s so light and gentle and removes every inch of my makeup in one wash without stripping my skin of its natural moisture. Which makes sense—it’s loaded with aloe vera and glycerin to restore moisture and sweet almond oil to seal it all in. Whenever I run low, I panic.
During a recent FaceTime with Rouleau, she asked if I regularly used a vitamin C product to which I replied, “No.” Rouleau gave me a knowing look and recommended I add it to my regimen. She’s a huge proponent of the antioxidant and even wrote a fascinating blog post about its preserving capabilities. I now use her C&E treatment every morning, which feels like more of a lightweight moisturizer than a serum, like other popular vitamin C products. I’ve put it to good use this summer after a lot of (short-term) sun exposure, and my skin has retained its clarity and overall radiance.
I use toner every single night for added hydration and don’t feel as though my routine is complete without it. This toner, in particular, is amazing for replenishing and soothing the skin, as it’s infused with omegas 3, 6, and 9 and niacinamide to restore the skin barrier. It’s also much more viscous than typical thin liquid toners, meaning I can dispense it onto my fingers and press it into my skin without losing any product in the process.
After seeing the magic this lotion worked in a before-and-after photo of Rouleau’s nephew’s reactive skin, I was hooked on its soothing prowess. It works to replenish the skin barrier while also calming redness and inflammation, which is great for my skin on days when it chooses to act up after testing a new product. But even on days when my skin is in check, it’s the perfect oil-free daily lotion to prep my skin before makeup and moisturize it before bed.
This has been one of the single most effective acne treatments I’ve ever used. Not only does it cut the breakout healing time in half, but it’s also non-irritating so you don’t get that tingly, burning sensation upon application. I also love it’s a clear, non-sticky gel, which means I can wear it in public without a care or leave it on to dry before applying makeup and no one's the wiser.
