I love a good ponytail. In fact, as someone who has never had exceptional hair—not great, but not completely void of potential, either—I've relied on the style for as long as I've been aware of my hair. (In fact, there was a period in middle school when I was pretty much positive I had a permanent dent in my hair courtesy of my favorite Goody ponytail holders.) Of course, that was over 10 years ago, but I still wear my hair in a ponytail (or high bun) more often than not. Between workouts and bad hair days, it's the easiest go-to for me.
The problem? Thanks to my fine hair texture and thinnish strands, my ponytail is, well, a little sad, with little to no volume to speak of. Until, that is, I was sent Barefoot Blonde's (aka Amber Fillerup Clark—the hair-blessed blogger and badass businesswoman) newest edition of extensions, the BFB Up ($115). With updos (low and high) in mind, this game-changing extension clip-in is strategically designed to transform a thin or short ponytail in about five seconds flat. Obviously, being the updo obsessive that I am, I was intrigued.
Even though I've never worn clip-in extensions (though I did have keratin bonded ones one summer a few years ago), I've followed Fillerup Clark's blog and Instagram account ever since I first became interested in beauty. She has the full, long, exceptionally beautiful hair I have always dreamed of, and ever since she first came out with her own gorgeous line of extensions, I've been waiting for the perfect excuse to try them. Of course, the brand-new launch specifically designed to thicken and transform ponytails, buns, and braids caught my attention immediately.
The 18-inch BFB Up is made from high-quality 100% human remy hair and comes in eight different colors. I was sent the Barefoot Blonde hue, which was the perfect match and also happens to be the exact shade Fillerup Clark wears—think light blonde with slightly warmer undertones. And, as promised, the extension is incredibly easy to use and the perfect antidote for a volume devoid updo.
As with all of the Barefoot Blonde extensions, there are ample instructions, tutorials, and styling ideas on the website which demonstrate how to use the extension in addition to the plethora of ways you can wear it. Seriously, the clip-in is SO easy to use and transforms any updo in less than five seconds—just look at my on-a-whim before-and-afters!
Since I'm slightly hair challenged, however, and since I usually opt for a straightforward tail—either high or low—or a low braid, those were the two styles I tried out first.
