We’ve all been there before. You’re super excited to try a new a product, and within a few minutes of applying, all of that excitement turns to horror. Suddenly your face is red, irritated, and possibly in pain. When it happens, all you want to do is a wave a magic wand, go back in time, and knock the product right out of your hands. We don’t have a magic wand to offer you, but we do have the next best thing: celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau. She knows exactly what to do in the midst of skin freak-out.
Keep reading to find how to calm your skin after a bad product reaction.
It may sound counterintuitive to put another product on, but Rouleau recommends reaching for a cooling, gel-based mask. “Applying a thick coat and leaving it on the skin for 20 minutes can provide both soothing relief and water-based hydration to comfort irritated skin cells,” Rouleau says. Look for one with aloe vera and clean, natural ingredients, like Eminence Organics mask. Just be sure to rinse with cool water and gently pat dry.
When your skin is inflamed, Rouleau says you need to keep your skincare routine simple. Use basic products like gentle, non-foaming cleansers; alcohol-free, antioxidant-rich toners; and a moisturizer for your skin type. We like Rouleau’s cleansing milk. “Hold off on using any skin serums, as these contain high concentrations of performance ingredients that may be too active on your skin right now,” Rouleau says.
“Mix a pea-size amount of hydrocortisone cream in with your moisturizer,” Rouleau says. “The addition of this over-the-counter cream works to reduce swelling, itching, and redness.” And remember to keep your hands off while your skin is healing.
