We've all been there: You only have a few more hours of work to go, and you feel downright exhausted. How are you supposed to get anything done when you're about to fall asleep at your desk? The obvious answer is to make a beeline for the office Keurig, but as we know, that doesn't always solve the problem. What's a sleep-deprived girl to do? According to a recent study published in Physiology and Behavior, the answer to the problem is not caffeine, but exercise—easy exercise, as in walking. For 10 minutes. Totally doable, right?
The study enlisted a group of tired college students, offering 50 milligrams of caffeine to half the participants—which is about as much that's found in a can of soda—and instructed the other half to walk up and down the stairs for 10 minutes. Sure enough, the group that exercised instead of reaching for a quick fix reaped the benefits of renewed energy and increased motivation much more so than their coffee-drinking counterparts.
The best part of this new finding is that the exercise in question is completely manageable for even the busiest of office workers. It's not dependent on the weather, and it won't take up too much of your afternoon. Excuse us while we take a few laps around the office.
