The first step in making your makeup last all day? Primer. Face primers, like Dior’s Diorskin Pore Minimizer ($42) and Hourglass’ Veil Mineral Primer Broad Spectrum ($52), create a flawless base, diminish the appearance of pores, and help your makeup stay put. Smooth one on after applying your a.m. moisturizer, before applying foundation, to prevent creasing or melting.
An eyeshadow primer like Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($12) will help your favorite shadow go on more smoothly, as well as work as a barrier between your oily lids and eye makeup.
If you have oily eyelids or are prone to mid-day raccoon eyes, swap out your normal eyeliner for a waterproof formula (because of their wax-based formula, they’ll stay smudge-free). Try Maybelline’s Unstoppable Eyeliner ($5) or Giorgio Armani’s Eyes to Kill Aqua Waterproof Eyeliner ($28).
If waterproof mascaras make your lashes feel dry and brittle, try sealing in your normal mascara with a waterproof topcoat like Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Lash Genius Waterproof Topcoat ($21) or Bare Escentuals’ Locked & Coated Waterproof Lash Topcoat ($12) instead.
Use an invisible lip liner like Lipstick Queen’s Invisible Lipliner ($18) to keep your lipstick from fading. First, fill in your entire lip with the liner, then apply your lipstick. Finish by tracing around your lip with the lip liner again to prevent feathering and creasing.

Another trick to make your lipstick last longer? Blotting—it not only removes excess product, but also helps the first layer of lipstick to sink into your lips. Apply a long-lasting lip color (creamy, matte formulas, like Kevyn Aucoin’s The Matte Lip Color ($33), tend to last longer and leave behind a pretty stain), then lightly blot with a tissue. Finish with another coat of lipstick and rest easy—you won’t have to reapply for hours.
Prepare yourself for any melted makeup emergency by carrying around a beauty emergency kit in your bag at all times. A powder compact, concealer, blotting papers, and cream blush (it can double as lip color if your lipstick fades!) are essentials.
