When spring and summer roll around, we feel a natural urge to switch out our go-to fragrances. While there are always those rare few that work all year round (we're looking at you, Maison Margiela Replica Filter Blur, $55), we'll temporarily set aside our heavy, spicy scents for their lighter counterparts. Think watery, citrusy, and floral scents as opposed to velvety florals and smoky ouds. In general, we want to stray from those warm après-ski vibes and move closer to something beachier. Because that's what summer is about, right?
Long days spent on the beach, in the sun, doing the things that we love. We think that the perfect summer fragrance should reflect that, which is why honeysuckle is one of our favorite fragrance notes. The tiny white and yellow flowers are equal parts fresh and sweet and thus remind us of a hot Saturday in July. We're serious when we say that honeysuckle perfumes are the closest thing we have to bottled sunshine.
This quaint glass bottle houses a classic honeysuckle-scented perfume from Fresh, which is a cosmetics brand known for its lightly floral scents (just look to its cult-favorite Rose Face Mask, $62, which is the epitome of a lightweight floral fragrance). Top notes of ylang-ylang, black currant, and golden peach mingle with middle notes of jasmine sambac, French honeysuckle, and magnolia.
This Wildfox perfume is meant for "lovers, skinny dippers, barefoot explorers, and late night chocolate eaters," according to the brand. (That just might be one of the best perfume descriptions we've ever heard.) It's slightly heavier than other honeysuckle fragrances, thanks to notes of absinthe mist, incense, jasmine essence, and musk, but the sweet honeysuckle still shines through.
If crisp scents are your thing, then you'll love this honeysuckle fragrance from Derek Lam. One of the main notes is fresh apple, which makes it smell lightweight and sophisticated. We think of it as the high-fashion take on honeysuckle perfume.
Usually, we don't associate honeysuckle perfume with being understated and woodsy, but this Estée Lauder perfume is just that. It mixes heart notes of honeysuckle and jasmine with scents of mandarin orange and patchouli for a unique take on an otherwise traditional perfume.
This perfume was inspired by the classic fable Androcles and the Lion (an ancient story of friendship), yet it smells surprisingly modern thanks to the combination of neroli, black currant, petitgrain, violet, amber, cedarwood, and of course honeysuckle. Basically, it smells how we would imagine a Disney princess would if she grew up, adopted a minimalist's aesthetic, and concocted her own natural fragrances out of local flora.
Clean Reserve's Sueded Oud is another perfume for people who don't like traditional floral fragrances. It's soft and woody and kind of creamy, too, thanks to incense oil, blue cypress, birchwood, honeysuckle, temple oud, Jasmine, and fir balsam, among other ingredients.
Or you can opt for this ultra-luxurious fragrance from cult-favorite Parisian brand Diptyque. This perfume has a base of honeysuckle and jasmine, a heart of wisteria, and top note of narcissus. It was inspired by the scent of a Venetian garden, so yes, it smells incredible.
This budget-friendly pick is unique in that it doesn't have multiple layered notes. It smells of pure honeysuckle, so it can be worn alone or layered with separate fragrances to create a personalized scent. Plus, you'll definitely get bang for your buck. It has a high scent concentration, so it only requires a spritz or two on your way out the door.
We'll leave you with one of our all-time favorites: Aerin Mediterranean Honeysuckle, which includes the same sweet floral we know and love, along with sparkling grapefruit, Italian bergamot, mandarin oil, and lily of the valley. It's basically like a distilled, bottled-up version of a vacation along the Italian coast.
