4 Steps to Make Your Face Look Instantly Slimmer

Remember the days when you used to watch endless YouTube makeup tutorials for tips and tricks, but that the result was often an unrecognisable version of yourself? Before you get carried away with contouring, highlighting and strobing, it pays to consider a more subtle approach, and to keep your natural facial structure front of mind.

Recently, we hit up makeup artist Jasmin Lo  to show us how best to highlight different face shapes. In this series of tutorials (where she uses three real women from the Byrdie Australia office), Lo road-tested the Marc Jacobs Beauty Coconut Face Collection, and shows you how to apply luminiser in the right way to flatter your unique face shape. In case you missed it, here's the how to for an oval face and in this tutorial, we're breaking down the technique for round faces.

According to Lo the most flattering highlighter technique for a naturally full face is essentially to avoid visually widening it further. This means your focus shouldn't be so much on cheekbones, but rather the centre line of your face. To make the most of your bone structure, follow the guide above and create dimension by applying luminiser at the bridge and tip of the nose, cupid's bow and chin.

1. Apply primer as a base to hydrate and perfect. (We used Marc Jacobs Beauty's cult Undercover Perfecting Coconut Primer, $63.) Next, buff on your foundation or tinted moisturiser, and spot conceal.

2. Using your ring finger, tap the a tiny dab of highlighter at the top of the bridge of your nose, just down from between your brows. (Try Marc Jacobs Beauty's Dew Drops Coconut Highlighter, $63.)

3. Using a similar amount of product, repeat the process, applying highlighter at the tip of your nose, cupid's bow and chin, blending well.

4. Sweep a shimmer-free bronzer just underneath the cheekbones to create the illusion of higher and more defined bone structure. (We used Marc Jacobs Beauty's Limited Edition O!Mega Bronze Coconut Perfect Tan Bronzer, $72.)
