It's no secret that your body's overall health and wellness is largely dependent on your thyroid. The little butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your throat secretes hormones that dictate the stability, response, and general function of super-important bodily processes—think metabolism, mood regulation, and digestion. In other words, a happy thyroid equals a happy body.
Thankfully, there are ways to keep that tricky endocrine system in check without turning to supplements or prescriptions. Diet is the number one way to do it. The foods you eat can directly affect your hormone levels, which is why we're so interested in finding out which foods are truly the best to consume for a healthy thyroid.
Enter Fern Olivia, a thyroid wellness expert. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, which is a type of thyroid dysfunction that can lead to symptoms like excessive fatigue, weight gain, temperature sensitivity, and even depression. To counter the disease, she upped her wellness routine, turning to yoga and nutrition. This morning, she dished on her favorite healthy, hormone-balancing dinner to Mind Body Green. Whether you suspect your hormones are out of whack or you just want to keep your thyroid happy and healthy, keep reading to see Olivia's tasty recipe!
Eating Bird Food
As Olivia told Mind Body Green, "Thyroid balance begins with nourishing your body with the nutrients it needs for healthy functioning. When you support your health with balanced meals, you really feel the difference in your thyroid, energy levels, and skin!" That's why Olivia turns to a super-easy hemp seed–encrusted salmon dish for a quick hormone-balancing meal.
Why hemp seed–encrusted salmon, you ask? According to Olivia, "Salmon is extremely high in selenium, which is important for thyroid health because it helps decrease inflammation, regulate immune responses, and prevent chronic diseases." Just be sure to choose wild-caught Alaskan or Norwegian fish, as they're devoid of harmful chemicals commonly found in their farmed fish counterparts.
Now for the hemp seeds: They're crucial to thyroid health as well since they "have the perfect ratio of omega-3:6 fatty acids, plus are bursting with vitamins, fiber, and a variety of essential minerals needed for optimal thyroid health."
Finally, add some dark leafy greens to the mix, which provide a number of detoxifying vitamins and minerals. Olivia chooses a mix of kale, spinach, arugula, and cilantro, which she says "are all composed of other health-enhancing phytonutrients." See her full recipe below!
