7 Multi-Use Products for People with Tons of Hair and Zero Time

Welcome to #HairGoals, our new series all about helping you get the hair of your dreams. We'll be featuring routines of real women with amazing hair, interviews with stylists about the products you should use for your hair type, and more.

Real talk: I hate routines. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a product obsessee–in theory, spending an hour layering serums is my definition of self-care. In reality, however, that almost never happens. I have a full-time job, a bustling social life, and laundry that always seems to need doing; I’m simply not at a place in my life where I can commit to a multi-product practice on the regular. Unfortunately, my lack of free time–and, let’s be real, laziness–is complicated by the fact that I have so much hair, my stylist requires I book a full haircut when I want what I would consider a trim. It takes hours for my hair to dry naturally, and if I try to save time by not washing it, I’m susceptible to greasy roots and lackluster lift.

There are, however, a few tried-and-true products that I stand by as time- and life-savers. I’m a big fan of working smarter, not harder, and I want my routine to celebrate that ethos rather than unnecessarily complicate my schedule. With the right tools, I’ve successfully managed to balance the rest of my life, skip the daily routine, and still get compliments on my mane. Read on for the scoop on the best time-saving hair products and how to use them.

1. Devacurl No-Poo Original Cleanser

Devacurl No-Poo Original Cleanser $18

I asked hair and makeup artist Moe Alvarez what products we could all cut from our routines. Her answer? The products you’re currently using. The easiest way to achieve glossy, healthy hair (without adding any time to your shower) is to rotate your products. She explains, “A good thing most people can ditch is using the same shampoo and conditioner all the time. Your hair gets used to certain products so if you ever feel like a product you once loved stopped working its magic, get another in rotation! Switch it up once in a while to see new results and fresher hair!”

2. Meow Meow Tweet Rosemary Avocado Shampoo Bar

Meow Meow Tweet Rosemary Avocado Shampoo Bar $12

Want to shave more minutes from your shower? Streamline your shampoo and conditioner. Multi-use shower products may evoke memories of the bleak bathrooms of boyfriends past, but they’ve turned a corner in 2019. DivaCurl’s classic cowash gently cleanses and conditions all curls, sans sulfates, parabens, and silicone, while Meow Meow Tweet’s eco-friendly bar works for hair and body, making for a super quick clean.

Sulfate-free shampoos are also more likely to keep your hair clean longer, as they prevent build-up, and they’re environmentally-friendly, too boot. “When it comes to products that are a must, it’s always good to use paraben and sulfate free products,” says Alvarez, adding, “If you have chemically treated, colored, thin or damaged hair I would find a sulfate free shampoo.”

3. Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo $25

Dry shampoo is a godsend for long-maned messes like myself, and I would be remiss not to shout out the product that regularly helps me go from work to gym to drinks. Opt for a dry shampoo like Amika's, which adds texture without leaving your hair stiff or powdery.

4. Aquis Microfiber Hair Towel

Aquis Microfiber Hair Towel $21

If you, like me, have long hair and are averse to blow-drying, microfiber wraps are a must. They cut down on drying time, tame frizz, and keep your hair out of your face while you get ready for your day, which is helpful if you, like me, try to cram makeup/email/breakfast into your drying time.

5. R+Co Chiffon Styling Mousse

R+Co Chiffon Styling Mousse $28

“My favorite trick to extend hair styles is blow drying mousse into hair before it’s dry to give you hair a different more textured and holdable texture,” says Alvarez. “Especially for people’s hair who doesn’t naturally hold a curl or style.” She recommends R+Co for a lightweight mousse with strong hold.

6. Ouai Rose Hair and Body Oil

Ouai Rose Hair + Body Oil $32

We’ve extolled on the virtues of hand cream to tame flyaways before, and I’m a true believer that in a pinch, I should be able to McGuyver my makeup bag into a last-minute salon. Enter multi-purpose oil: super light formulas that moisturize hair and skin alike, cutting down on application time and freeing up precious bathroom counter real estate. I’m personally fond of slathering myself in oil after I shower, and keeping a mini bottle at hand for on-the-go dry ends.

7. O&M Seven Day Miracle™ Moisture Mask

O&M Seven Day Miracle™ Moisture Mask $36

My personal biggest hair hack? Make your products work while you sleep. Applying hair masks overnight saves time and energy, and waking up with princess hair is truly a feeling like no other. PETA-approved O&M’s Miracle Moisture Mask delivers long-lasting moisture, for those of us who can’t remember to apply more than once a week.
