Whether you plan on taking the whole "new year, new you" thing super literally with a drastic change in hair color or are just looking to enhance your natural shade, now's the time to start scoping out your options. Which is precisely why we turned to Cutler Salon colorist Carly Militello and TIGI U.S. technical educational director Renee Valerie to share the key colors they believe will be taking over our Instagram feeds throughout 2018. Click through to see the hair color trends that are slated to be major news this coming year.
"There's definitely a richness being brought back to the brunette pallet, with influence from luxurious chocolate and carob shades bringing strength and substance to their hair," says Valerie, who called out Zendaya as the perfect inspo for this look.
Sofía Vergara's deep chocolate-brown locks are another prime example of this color trend.
Issa Rae is another great celebrity example for this particular trend, according to Valerie.
"Traditionally our clients have wanted to go deeper and darker for winter, but the latest trend is brightening up a little. There's little sun, so having some brightness in your hair is gorgeous. For brunettes, this means lots of face-framing highlights, end-lights or soft brown baby-lights," says Militello. Case in point: Priyanka Chopra's gorgeous look above.
Militello also recommends looking to Serena Williams, who shows off her natural curls with a subtle light brown tint.
Another celeb Militello recommends is Jessica Biel, who lightens her brunette shade with pretty caramel highlights.
"All highlights, whether blonde or brown, are intentionally slightly deeper at the roots," says Militello. "At Cutler, we call it a 'root dim.' You can achieve this look by using a darker color to highlight the roots and by using a lighter color for the ends. This means two different formulas in the same foil. You can also get this look by glazing the roots at the sink with a slightly deeper color than you would use at the ends." A great example of this? The one and only Khloé Kardashian.
"It's more subtle than beachy highlights or
the extreme ombré," says Militello, who brings up Gigi Hadid as the perfect example. "It's just slightly deeper at the roots, which gives the hair color a cool, lived-in look."
Another prime example? Jessica Alba's root-dimmed locks.
"So many celebrities are going blonde—even those who have always been brunettes," notes Militello. "And most of them are going platinum." Exhibit A: Kim Kardashian West's icy new look. We're slowly being convinced to take that white-blonde plunge for ourselves.
Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke also went the platinum-blonde route recently, and we're definitely not complaining.
For natural redheads and anyone looking to go red, Militello says the key is to go brighter to bring more dimension. Look to celebrities like Jessica Chastain for hair inspo.
Madelaine Petsch is another It girl to turn to if you're looking to go red.
And then, of course, there's Christina Hendricks, who's kept the signature red tresses of her Mad Men days.
Also on our experts' radar when it comes to 2018 hair color trends? Thinking a bit more experimentally. "I find that what was more unconventional two years ago is more commonplace now, so clients are more willing to try something new," Valerie tells us. "Colors from the violet family are definitely going to be more common after Ultraviolet was named the Pantone color of 2018. So look forward to seeing a lot of pink, lavender, mauve, and violet hues," says Valerie. We don't know about you, but DJ Sita Abellan's tresses are giving us major color envy.
"Fantasy colors will still be trending in 2018, but they'll be much more subtle and pearlescent. Think soft pearly pinks, rose golds for both blondes and brunettes, and dusty pastels," says Militello. Sienna Miller, ever the trailblazer in all things trendy, showed off this look back in 2013.
Remember when Kylie Jenner debuted a pearly pink shade on her Instagram earlier this year?
