Gray was everywhere you looked on the Fall 2013 runways; it was light at Derek Lam, dewy at Prada, rock ‘n roll at Marc Jacobs, and surprisingly soft at Alexander Wang. Gray felt fresh when Jessica Biel wore it instead of black mascara to the Met Ball (the septum ring didn’t hurt either), so now that fall’s finally here, we’re ditching our black liners and kohl shadows in favor of something slightly softer.
Makeup artist Kristina Brown used CK One Color Mascara ($18) in Confess on model Sasha’s long lashes. “It looks a bit haunted and feels really cool, instead of just pretty,” says Brown.
The best thing about gray? It goes with everything. “Steer clear of sparkle,” Brown says. “And use a primer prior to application. This trend is a matte look so you want to keep creasing at bay.” For this Alexander Wang-inspired eye, try Nars Single Eyeshadow ($24) in Euphrate on the top of the lid with a light pink or peach, like L’Oreal Infallible Color Eye Shadow ($6) in Forever Pink, below your crease.
Brown calls gray a “low-key statement color,” making it the perfect route to a subtler cat eye that feels more office-appropriate. Here, she used Urban Decay’s Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($19) in Revolver.
The contrasting eye, a nod to the look Tom Pecheux created at Altuzarra’s fall show, is surprisingly easy to wear. Try a medium shade of shadow on your lid, like Illamasqua’s Powder Eyeshadow ($20) in Feline, and a bolder color on your lower lashline. Brown used the lower right hand shade in Tom Ford’s Eye Color Quad ($78) in Seductive Rose, on trend with fall’s shades of burgundy, but anything in the purple or blue family works, too.
