Textured, beachy waves: The hairstyle seems so simple, yet it's so elusive—one wrong move can leave your strands with less than desirable results. Crunchy hair from too much product? Yeah, we’ve been there. Luckily. pro hairstylist Travis Balcke gave us the inside scoop on exactly how to create the perfectly unkempt, back-from-the-beach waves possessed only by Free People models (until now). To illustrate his tips, feast your eyes on the latest editorial from Free People's March catalog, shot in Australia (where else?). Gemma Ward-worthy waves? Yes, please.

Soft waves start with healthy, hydrated hair, which start with... shampoo? "The right shampoo can literally wash away your dryness and give better quality to your hair," Balcke says. "The wash process is when your hair can be repaired the easiest.” Balcke’s shampoo of choice is Wella's Luxe Oil Keratin Protect Shampoo ($22); we swear by Reverie's Nude Shampoo ($38) and Kevin Murphy Repair.Me Rinse.
Summer-ready, Free People model–worthy hair really only takes a few minutes, according to Balcke. “Wash your hair the night before, take out 80% of the moisture, then apply a salt spray and a leave-in conditioner,” advises Balcke. Some of our faves are Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray ($15) and Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner ($26).
Finish off by twisting your hair into a loose bun and go to bed. The next day, you’ll wake up with loose waves that give off major Aussie-babe vibes.
So you finally achieved the perfect waves and don't want to say goodbye just yet? Just pick up your favorite dry shampoo and put your hair up in a ponytail. The dry shampoo will give your hair extra volume and texture, and your pony will be extra perky. Best (and easiest) second-day hairstyle ever.
