Five Fresh Looks for Hannah Simone

There are a string of reference images hanging in our studio when New Girl’s Hannah Simone walks in for our shoot—more than one starring Kate Moss. “It’s just not fair,” Simone says, admiring the model’s cheekbones. The same could be said of Simone, especially her hair. The actress, who was born in London, raised in Canada, Cyprus, and India, before happily landing in Los Angeles, sports the thickest, shiniest locks we’ve ever seen. So would hairstylist Giannandrea, we wondered, test run a few new looks?

Armed with plenty of ideas, products, and hot tools, Giannandrea took Simone from a sleek, ‘60s-inspired look to tousled, grungy texture. Before he got started, he coated Simone’s locks in Kerastase’s Volumizing Mousse ($34) from roots to lengths, and rough dried it ¾ of the way. “It’s like building a foundation,” he says. “The diffuser builds volume without stretching the hair.”

Meanwhile, makeup artist Fabiola got down to basics, using shades of brown from Chanel, Bobbi Brown, and Tom Ford to contour Simone’s face with barely-there makeup. “I wanted her to look cool and rock and roll, but used brown instead of black because it’s softer and she has such dramatic features,” she says.

Hairstylist Giannandrea was inspired by Italian screen siren Claudia Cardinale when it came to whipping up a ponytail for Simone. “She always did a little bit of a bump in back,” he says. “It was very sexy.”

BLK DNM Black Sleeveless Leather Biker Jacket ($944) in Black; Jacquie Aiche Twisted Double Ear Band ($325, 310.550.7529) in 14k White Gold; Jacquie Aiche Spaced Out Diamond Double Ear Band ($950,310.550.7529) in 14k White Gold; Jacquie Aiche Pave Diamond Ice Pick Stud Earring ($715, price per stud, 310.550.7529) in 14k White Gold.

It took Giannandrea three minutes to pull Simone’s hair into a pompadour. He used Macadamia’s No Tangle Pre-Styler ($23) for just the right amount of shine.

T by Alexander Wang Distressed Merino Blend Knit Pullover ($275) in Forest; Gabriela Artigas Infinite Tusk Earrings ($360) in 14k Gold.

Giannandrea’s favorite look—roughed up, rockstar hair—might actually be the easiest to try at home. “Twist small sections of hair, spray with Redken’s 22 Thermal Setting Mist ($16), and flat iron,” he says. “It’s a simple technique that is very effective!”

LNA Vintage Tee Shirt ($99) in White; David Yurman 16’’L Box Chain Necklace ($285) in Sterling Silver; David Yurman Baby Box Chain Necklace ($155) in Sterling Silver.

If you want to invest in one of the palettes Fabiola used most often on set, make it Tom Ford’s Eyeshadow Quad ($78) in Cognac Sable.

H&M Sheer Tank Top ($10) in White; Aurelie Bidermann Two Cobs Wheat Ring ($129) in Silver.

“I always like a little bit of romanticism in the hair,” says Giannandrea. The key to Simone’s winning texture? Rough drying wet locks—as in, step away from the brush and let your frizz fly.
