A Q&A with the Co-Founder of Feals, the Membership CBD Service Everyone's Buzzing About

Feals

“Feals is about a healthy, natural way to eliminate/reduce stress, anxiety, pain and even help you get a better night's sleep,” shares the CBD brand’s co-founder Drew Todd. If we’re being honest, the direct-to-consumer CBD oil brand already had our attention with its simple packaging in just the right tinge of orange. It matters what products look like in your medicine cabinet, right? Half kidding— it does for this editor, and clearly the co-founders behind the wellness brand. They went through 120 different shades of orange before they landed on this color.

While it may seem inconsequential, the attention to detail in the packaging is an indication of the level of care in the sourcing and creating of their CBD product as well as the customer experience.

“Despite there being this huge surge of CBD, when you actually talk to people, no one really knows what CBD is, no one really knows how much they need to take, they don't really know where it comes from, and they don't really know if they're getting any benefit from it or not,” says Todd. (If you’re looking for a crash course on what CBD does and how it works, we’ve got you covered.)

Feals’ company ethos is to simplify everything that’s happening in the CBD space. “We follow a less-is-more mentality where we work with two ingredients: CBD oil and 100 % organic MCT oil. And that's it,” Tod says definitively. You won’t find any additives like fillers, chemicals, or flavors. As a matter of fact, Feals only offers one product in its line, but it’s available in three potencies. “The market is totally flooded with CBD products, but arguably most of those CBD products don't have enough CBD in them to actually make a difference,” adds Todd.

Ahead, he answers everything from how CBD works to what separates Feals from hundreds of CBD brands.

What is the biggest misconception about CBD oil you’d like to dismiss?

“The biggest misconception right now is that CBD will get you high. There’s still a large amount of negative stigma associated with cannabis in general, but unlike THC, CBD doesn’t produce a psychoactive effect or ‘high.’ That’s what makes it pretty amazing—you get all the benefits while staying clear-headed and balanced throughout your day.”

How is the CBD in Feals farmed?

Feals is produced with cannabis sativa (hemp) plants that are bred to contain less than 0.3 percent THC. (the legal limit for THC). We work with family-owned farms in Colorado and Oregon that grow and harvest following organic practices. The plants are free of pesticides and contaminants, and are hand-shucked before they are dried and cured in a protected environment. The plant’s terpenes (what gives Feals its flavor and scent) are super sensitive and want to go where moisture goes, so it’s important that this is done right.

Each crop is tested for heavy metals, microbials, potency and pesticides before moving to extraction.”

What ingredients should someone avoid when it comes to their CBD products?

“Avoid products that originate from overseas or products that contain mostly isolate CBD. While not listed on the label, these types of products have a higher likelihood of containing toxic additives and chemicals.”

Give us a brief overview of how CBD works.

“The human body's endocannabinoid system consists of tiny receptors that play a key role in regulating mood, pain, and everyday experience. This is pretty new science—we’ve only known about this system for the last 25 or so years, but it’s believed to be the most prevalent network of receptors in the human body. We know of two things that can activate these receptors—endocannabinoids (which are naturally occurring compounds in the human body) and phytocannabinoids (plant-based cannabinoids that interact with the body the same way as the endocannabinoids produced by your body).

CBD is a phytocannabinoid that helps these receptors do what's needed in order to stimulate all kinds of beneficial changes throughout the body. You could even say our bodies are hard-wired to benefit from CBD.”

How does Feals’ membership model work?

“We’re the first CBD brand to offer a membership model and reward customers that are ready to make a commitment to feeling better by offering 30% off all orders. Everyone hates getting caught in subscriptions, so we made membership worry-free with the ability to pause or cancel anytime.”

Why did Feals choose to use MCT oil specifically as the only other ingredient other than CBD?

“We found that it provided the highest efficacy and highest bio-availability for the product to provide the greatest benefit with our CBD,” says Drew.

What’s the best way to take CBD so that it actually does anything?

“Taking CBD sublingually is going to be the quickest way that it is absorbed. People can also put it in their drinks if they're not a big fan of the taste. I actually take Feals in the morning in replacement of MCT oil in my bulletproof coffee.”

How can a consumer be smart about buying CBD products that actually contain enough CBD to do anything?

“One of the biggest challenges in the industry as a whole is there's CBD being marketed in everything. Now it's in your skincare, it's in your coffee is in your tinctures, it's in your tonics. There are a lot of companies that are just riding this wave—the buzz—where they're really not thinking of how to really benefit the consumers. They're just trying to tap into what the CBD market has become. An educated consumer should start by reading the label. And because the industry is so new there's a lot of discrepancy when it comes to labeling.

But, primarily what you want to focus on is how much CBD is actually in the total product, which is typically the number that's on the front of the bottle. From that point, then you want to really understand how much CBD is actually in a dose or in a dropper. And from that point, you can kind of measure between products to have a better understanding of how much CBD there actually is. I know Feals is about half the size of most tinctures in the market, but it has between four to 10 times as much CBD, because we're just focused on really, really high-quality products including a tremendous amount of CBD in a little container.

So, the size of container is not always the best judgment of potency of the product.”

What are the benefits of taking CBD?

“It's not about what you feel, but it's about what you don't feel. If you have any issues going on, like if you're feeling stressed out, if you're feeling anxiety, if you're feeling pain—with proper CBD usage, those feelings kind of fade away into the background, and you just become much more present and have less distraction from any of the ailments that may have been bothering you.”

“CBD affects everyone differently. Everyone's unique and everyone's endocannabinoid system is uniquely theirs. And so CBD interacts with each person's endocannabinoid system in a unique way, which means that it's really difficult to prescribe or tell someone how much CBD someone should be taking in one dose.

It's really a process of self-discovery, where people need to learn how much CBD is right for them. We recommend starting with low doses, checking in with yourself, seeing how your body reacts, and then working your way up until you find that perfect dose where you start feeling the benefit.”
