At Byrdie, we spend countless hours combing social media, interviewing experts, and meeting with brands to get the inside scoop on new launches and products. And we pride ourselves on being the first in discovering rising talent. We love exposing you to people doing big things in the beauty world—everyone from models and hairstylists to makeup artists—and introducing you to them before anyone else. Over the last few months, we've had our eyes trained on one particular rising star in the hair industry—someone who's making waves (pun definitely intended): Los Angeles-based hairstylist Carly Walters.
We're banking on Walters becoming the next big name in hair you need to know, so to help accelerate her rise to the top, we're partnering with TRESemmé to send her to work her first-ever show at New York Fashion Week. Cue the squeals.
We can't overstate what a big deal this is, so to arm her with everything she needs to know on her Road to #TRESNYFW, we're introducing Walters to four of the brand's biggest stylists who've been in the business for years. They've worked shows from Miami Swim Week to New York Fashion Week, they own salons, they create all the red-carpet looks—suffice to say, they have more than a few tricks and tips to share up their sleeves.
Over the coming weeks, each featured TRESemmé stylist will get a chance to collaborate with Carly and create a hairstyle using their favorite TRESemmé products. They'll offer up their styling expertise, as well as advice for making it through such a high-energy work environment while backstage at NYFW. It’ll be quite the journey, and we’re so excited to take you along for the ride. But before we officially get on the road, let’s introduce you to our stylists.
You might recognize Carly Walters from Instagram—her page is full of celebrity hair content, and her bubbly personality is hard to ignore. Walters received her cosmetology license from the Vidal Sassoon Academy and went to work almost immediately assisting and taking clients at the Ken Paves Salon in Beverly Hills. Fast forward four years and her client list has grown impressively. Known for her daring and unique styles, Walters’s diverse knowledge of hair has taken her all over the world—and her career is just getting started.
Right after high school, Marco Peña quickly made a name for himself when he was snapped up by one of the most renowned salons in Colombia, where he met Shakira and became her personal stylist and assistant as she traveled the globe. In more recent years, he’s been the artist behind many celebrities and their red carpet looks, and he’s now leading the TRESemmé stylist team for the Hispanic market. Known for his innovative hairstyles, Peña was recently honored by the national publication Siempre Mujer for his outstanding work as a hair colorist.

Dividing her time between NYC and L.A., Ursula Stephen is the visionary stylist behind some of Rihanna’s most celebrated looks, as well as those of celebrities like Kerry Washington and Naomie Harris. (ICYWW, Stephen was the mastermind behind RiRi's iconic bob.) She’s worked with the great fashion photographers of our time, including Steven Meisel and Annie Leibovitz, and her work has graced the pages of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and more. As a brand ambassador, she has also led various TRESemmé sponsored New York Fashion Week shows. If that's not enough, back in 2013 she opened her own salon in the heart of Brooklyn. Stephen's goal is to have more women embrace their natural hair texture, and has put years of work into educating other stylists on hair types—because once you understand texture, anything is possible.
An accomplished stylist who has been in the industry for more than 10 years, Justine Marjan splits her time between L.A. and NYC to accommodate her hectic schedule. She spent the early days of her career attending workshops to refine her skills before apprenticing under Jen Atkin, where she refined her skillset to accommodate celebrities, cameras, lighting, and film. And it worked—today Marjan is known for creating the looks of the most photographed stars, like the Kardashians, Olivia Culpo, and Chrissy Teigen. In February 2017, Marjan was named global stylist for TRESemmé and led a team of world-renowned stylists in creating runway looks for 17 New York Fashion Week F/W shows.
Three weeks after graduating from The School of Hair Design by L’Oréal, Tyler Laswell moved from his Kentucky hometown to the Big Apple to start his career at the prestigious Bumble and bumble salon. His talent was obvious, and he quickly started flying across the country to do hair for major publications like Vogue, Glamour, and InStyle. Over the years, his client list has grown to include Heidi Klum, Kelly Osbourne, and Gabrielle Union, among others. He’s been to New York Fashion Week a number of times with TRESemmé, and has worked shows including Mara Hoffman, Jenny Packham, Rebecca Minkoff, and Marissa Webb. Laswell continues to travel around the world styling hair for editorial and advertising campaigns.
