With fall comes seasonal shopping and, inevitably, seasonal manicures. Though it's no longer true that we all have to opt for moody colors to match the weather. Instead (IMHO), we're all going a little rogue and painting our fingertips with the colors we feel like wearing, instead of just those dictated to us by fall trends from big brands.
So I reached out to a few Byrdie editors for the fall nail colors they're most excited to wear once the leaves turn orange. Below, find our favorite nail shades.
"In the interest of some much-needed nail rehab and all-around practicality, I had a polish-free summer. And while I am excited to play with color again, I really do love the versatility of a nude nail. The slightly sheer, iridescent finish on this Butter London shade is absolutely perfect—the best of both worlds." —Victoria Hoff, wellness editor
"I'm so excited that red is so big for fall—I'm notorious for wearing all-black ensembles once the temperatures fall (NYC habits die hard), so this statement shade will breathe new life into my wardrobe. That includes my nails, aka a built-in accessory. This fire engine hue is totally on point—the louder, the better." —Victoria Hoff, wellness editor
"So I have this obsession with great nude-mauves or ultra-dark shades. My tried and true alternative to basic beige or ballet slipper pinks is Nails Inc. Nail Polish in Porchester Square ($15). The formula is a dream, and the color is incredibly flattering. Honestly, I just think it makes my hands look pretty, and I get compliments when I wear it. It's slightly moody for summer but a great option come fall." —Erin Jahns, assistant editor
"As an alternative to black or burgundy, I also like navy. Whenever I wear Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in Mariniere ($28), I can't stop staring at my fingers." —Erin Jahns, assistant editor
"As far as something new for fall, I'm really into the sunset-tinged oranges and browns. So many people seem to gape in horror at the thought of brown nail polish, but I think it's interesting and different! (And way more flattering than most people would ever think.) For fall, I have my eye on Jinsoon Nail Polish in Idyll ($18)." —Erin Jahns, assistant editor
"Ever since I had a killer set of almond-shaped gel extensions (think retro pin-up and Grease), I haven't been able to shake true red from my fingertips. It's classic but somehow, in my opinion, has become edgy again as everyone else has moved on to different colors. This fall, I'm all about Essie's Really Red glossy polish." —Hallie Gould, senior editor
"I picked up my first bottle of this rich, oxblood number when I studied abroad in Paris. I painted it on my nails almost every week for a year before swapping it out for blacks, blues, and beige. Now, after a few years, I can't possibly understand why I stopped wearing it. It's chic and sophisticated-looking, stays on longer than any other polish I've used, and feels perfect for the crisp, coat-appropriate fall weather." —Hallie Gould, senior editor
