4 Stunning Eye + Lip Pairings to Try This Fall

There are a lot of beauty blogs—but makeup artist Robin Black’s Beauty Is Boring is different from the rest. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s less of a blog and more of a documentation of Black’s talent for both creating and capturing mesmerizing works of makeup art. Maybe it’s the fact that every single one of her posts gives us the strong urge to deep-dive into our own makeup bags and forgo our classic cat eye in favor of gilded gold or, hey, why not pastel-colored flowers? Whatever the reason, we’ve bookmarked Beauty Is Boring as one of our favorite Internet destinations and are thrilled to have Black curate—as well as break down—some of her original looks for Byrdie. Enjoy!

Shimmering Lids + Statement Red

A statement red lip is always in style, but what to pair it with? The classic nude eye is a staple, but why not elevate the look by applying a wash of shimmering color around your eye? Depending on your skin tone, bronze, rose gold, plum, or taupe all go beautifully with this warm red lip.

Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow ($34) in Caroube

Chanel Rouge Coco ($36) in Coco

 My tips:

- Use a loose fluff brush to blend the color around your eye, creating a soft watercolor effect.

- Ground the look by filling between your top lashes with black liquid liner and applying several coats of mascara.

- A bit of white liner on the bottom waterline keeps eyes looking fresh and awake regardless of the hour.

Monochrome Eyes + Lips

Get matchy-matchy with your makeup and use the same color (or versions of the same color) on your eyes, cheeks, and lips! You can either pick a favorite product and use it on all your features or pick several products that are similar in shade.

Product ID:

Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base ($48)(used as eye shadow and blush)

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick in Stoned Rose ($32)

My tips:

- If you do use cream blush or lipstick on your eyelids, remember to apply a translucent eyelid primer first to keep it in place.

- When picking a blush or lip color to wear on your eyelids, make sure the undertone isn’t too red. A sheer red eyelid is cool but probably too goth for your office holiday party.

- Using three different products that are variations on the same shade is a beautiful way to update the ’90s monochrome look.

Gold + Glossy

There has been so much hype about gold makeup lately (largely due to genius Pat McGrath’s recent Gold 001 product release) that it’s become impossible to ignore. At first it might seem a bit intimidating, but gold can be very wearable when balanced with glistening natural lips.

Product ID:

Make Up For Ever Flash Pot in Gold ($19)

Nars Shimmer Eyeshadow in Goldfinger ($25)

Clarins HydraQuench Lip Balm ($24)

My tips:

- If your natural lip color is very pale, try filling your entire lip shape in with a lip pencil two shades deeper than your own color. Then, top with clear gloss.

 - Try a sheer gold on the eyes for day and an intense metallic gold at night.

- Keep Scotch tape on hand to lightly tap to remove any bits of gold that escape your eyelid.

Emerald Eyes + Nude Lips

A graphic sweep of emerald green is the perfect eye makeup for this season’s festive gatherings. Pair it with a nude lip for a sophisticated, modern look.

Product ID:

MAC Fluidline Gel Liner in Shade ($17)

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Nude Kate ($32)

My tips:

- Try a matte emerald green for a cocktail party or a sparkling green for a night of dancing.

- Emphasize the graphic eyeliner shape by keeping the rest of the face nude and your brows natural.

- Use a small bit of Scotch tape or the edge of a business card to create clean outer edges.

- Experiment with mixing textures, such as matte eyeliner with satin lips.
