Fall calls for leather jackets, cozy sweaters, booties, and new lipstick, of course. We're proponents of rocking bright, summery shades all year long—do you, girl. But we also get excited about pulling out shades we've been hoarding particularly for fall. Think deep berry, warm brown, and sultry red shades. As a brown girl, I've always loved rocking deeper lip shades because they bring out the golden tones of my complexion so perfectly.
We reached out to two makeup artists who work with some our favorite women in Hollywood. Taraji P. Henson's makeup artist, Ashunta Sheriff, filled us in on the fall lipsticks she reaches for during every season of hit TV show Empire. HBO's Insecure actress Yvonne Orji's makeup artist, Camara Aunique, also gave us the lowdown on her go-to shades for women of color.
Brown-skinned beauties, Aunique wants you to stop shying away from color. "Brown girls should follow their heart and be confident enough to try bold colors," she expressed. "Don't be afraid to try a bright pink, purple, or any color that might look beautiful on you. You’ll never know if you don’t try."

"This is newcomer to the beauty industry but is a universally flattering shade of gloss for all dark-skinned beauties," says Sheriff. (Editor's note: The moment Team Byrdie got this gloss in our hands at the office, we all tried it—and it truly does look good on various skin tones. Believe the hype.)
"This is a nice burgundy shade with brown undertones," says Aunique. "It has a matte finish that stays on all day, and it doesn’t keep your lips feeling dry when you apply it. And who doesn't want a matte that lasts all day?"
"All of these Milani shades are amazing—I use these on Cookie on Empire, and they combine beautifully to make great customizable shades or look perfect worn alone," says Sheriff.
"I love curl friend because it’s such a pretty pink, mauve shade," says Aunique. "If you pair this with a nice soft brown liner, like MAC Lip Pencil in Chestnut ($18) it'll be such a great fall lip."
"Mented Cosmetics developed natural nude shades for women of color," says Aunique. "So its whole line is dedicated to all women of color finding the perfect nude for their complexion. They also carry darker tones like burgundy and brown shades, too. My favorite shade is Baby Brown—it’s the brand's new lip gloss line, and if you pair that with MAC Lip Pencil in Chestnut ($18), it'll be a beautiful brown lip.
"Ruby Woo is a classic fire engine red that has a retro vibe that's still modern. This shade never gets old," says Sheriff. Fact: Ruby Woo was the first perfect red I discovered for my skin tone. I was a teenager and have been wearing it ever since.
Sheriff is also a fan of The Lip Bar: "These vegan lipsticks come in bold and beautiful rich cream colors with strong staying power."
"This is soft, sheer neutral pink gloss that looks great layered on top of colors or alone," says Sheriff.
"This is a gorgeous deep burgundy hue with blue undertones," says Aunique. "It also has a matte finish, which is a plus."
Editorial Director Faith Xue handed me this lip crayon to try, and I've been in love with it ever since. I'd even say that this warm, chocolate hue is a perfect nude for my deep skin tone. The precise tip makes it easy to line and fill in your lips all at once.
