I have a love-hate relationship with sunscreen. I grew up going to the beach almost every day in the summer—swimming in the cool, fresh water of Lake Michigan and laying out on the sandy shore for hours on end. Back then, I thought sunscreen was only something you were supposed to wear at the beach. In fact, throughout all of high school, and even through the first half of college, I didn't use a daily SPF.
As I grew older, I grew more wary of UV exposure (and the premature signs of aging and damage that it could cause), so I started using sunscreen routinely. Even then, though, I found it difficult to stick to a daily sunscreen. I hated the goopy, greasy feeling of most traditional SPF products. I hated the white cast some of them would leave on my skin hours later. I didn't like the fact that I almost always smelled strongly of banana and coconut (why would I wear my expensive perfume if my sunscreen overpowered it?).
After testing countless products, I found only a select few that I truly loved—well, four to be exact. They were EltaMD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 ($35), Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen SPF 30 ($32), Glossier Invisible Shield ($25), and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen ($20). Each one of these protects my skin without disrupting it or my following makeup routine.
Recently, though, I came across a new SPF brand that I'd never heard of before. It's called Everyday, and it kept my skin protected throughout a searing hot six-hour long pool day. Keep scrolling to learn all about it.
The first product I tried was the brand's daily face sunscreen, which is pithily named Resting Beach Face. While it first and foremost protects the skin with SPF 30, it also doubles as a serum and primer, thanks to hydrating and antioxidant-rich superfood ingredients like kale, spinach, and seaweed. Its liquid-milk texture is incredibly lightweight. I wear it every single day, with or without makeup, and I swear it absorbs completely within mere seconds. In fact, it feels like there's absolutely nothing on my skin...which means any makeup I might wear applies smoothly and evenly.
This product alone protected my face from sunburn during my six-hour pool day. That's impressive, seeing as it was 90 degrees and I was laying on a lounge chair above hot concrete in direct sun (sure, it wasn't the healthiest decision to lay in the sun that long, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else, but at least I didn't get burnt, right?). I even forgot to bring a hat that day. That's how effective this stuff was at shielding my skin.
From my neck down I applied the brand's body sunscreen. Just like the aforementioned face sunscreen, this one is lightweight, non-greasy, and fast-absorbing. I like the fact that it's also antioxidant-rich, thanks to a combination of matcha and cucumber extracts (as you may already know, antioxidants defend against free radicals, which are nasty little particles that harm DNA and cause damage to our skin). I felt like even though I was exposing my skin to UV rays, I was doing my due diligence by applying this first.
My only qualm is that it came off fairly easily in the pool even though it claims to be water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Maybe it was because it was especially hot that day, and I was sweating as well as swimming, but I would still recommend re-applying it every single time you get out of the water. You know, just to be safe; sunburn is the worst.
On that note: it's free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, parabens, phthalates, artificial colors and synthetic fragrances. In other words, it's reef-friendly, so even if it washes off a bit in the water, you don't have to worry about it doing a number on the marine environment.
Sure, this one isn't an SPF product, but I had to include it, because it's so damn refreshing. Like I said before, it was searing hot this weekend. Whenever I began to feel uncomfortably warm, I would re-apply my sunscreen and then spritz this soothing mist over the top. It cooled me off and made my skin feel calm, happy, and hydrated.
The clear, cool liquid is made up of aloe vera, witch hazel, and vitamin C-rich kakadu plums and desert limes, so it's basically like a tall glass of water for your skin. I'm personally a sucker for anything with vitamin C in it (it provides brightening and anti-aging effects; what's not to love?), which is why I've made this the newest fixture of my beach/pool bag.
Aside from the SPF products and the mist, Everyday makes a hydrating balm and an aluminum-free natural deodorant (I have yet to test the latter). The balm is formulated with papaya, acai, sunflower seed oil, and soybean germ extract, and its purpose is to moisturize the lips or any other dry skin on the body. I personally use it as I would any other lip balm. It has a minty scent that's just right—it's fresh and invigorating without being overwhelming—, and a nice cooling effect that keeps my lips feeling soft and supple.
I only wish it had SPF in it, but still, I put it in my beach/pool bag, and I don't see myself ever taking it out.
